CALIFORNIA URGING FEDERAL ASSISTANCE FOR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT FINANCING TO ALLEVIATE TNE INCREASING SALINITY LEVEL OF THE SALTON SEA AND INSURE ITS PRESERVATION ii tEREAS, the City of Palm Deaert California in the Coachella Valley is Within the influence area of the Salton Sta from tha atandpoint of recreation and economics; and HHEREAS. the City has reason to concern itself with any matters affecting the recreation and economics of the County of Riverside; and WiIERFAS, it has been determined that the problem of increasing salinity of the Salton Sea is rapidly eliminating the value of that vast inland body of water for recreation purposea; and WHEREAS, the deterioration of this body of water is of great environmental concern to the Valley, the County, and the State and indeed the entire nation; and WHEREAS the loss of this vast recreation facility will have economic impact upon the entire nation as it relates to recreational equipment manufacturing; and iiEiEREAS, the loss of this body of water will also be a losa to the United Statea Naval Facility located at Weetmoreland. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Palm Deaert City Council that the City does hereby: 1. Strongly endorse the proposal for Federal asaistance to con truct a Forty (40) square mile dike syatem within the Three Hundred Forty (340) square mile Salton Sea which purpoae is to aid in the alleviation af the increasing ealinity content of that inland body of water; 2. Urge the Secretary of the Interior to reconsider and authoriza ttu granting of Congreesionally allocated funde to support this proj ct which is preeently estimated to be from $38 Million to $S8 Million; and 0 RESOLUTION N0. 75-5 PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this 13th day of February, 1975, by the City Council of the City of Palm Desert, California, by the followin� vote: AYES: Aston; Benson; Brush; McPherson; Clark NOES: None ABSENT: None ATTEST: .
