Fontana may not be comPleted. Stater+ide, Caltrans Nilt lose 5125,000,000 in
federal HigM+ay Funds next year. These are our dollars paid in the form of
federal Gas Taxes by California high+ay users that will not be claimed by this
State; and
MHEREAS. the solution to Caltrans' funding probtems lies Mith the State
Le9islature and the Governor. A* least a 3t increase in the gas tax is needed
to carry on a minimum higM+ay construction program. Nithout this increase, it
appears State laxs may be violated by Caltrans in that funding fo County
mininuns will ot be possible; and
MNEREAS. the continued economical gra+th of suburban and rural California
is dependent upon a netr+ork of safe, modern higinrays and free++ays.
t1pW. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOIVED that the City Council of the City of
Palm Desert respectfully recommends and stron9ly urges that Governor
Edmund 6. Bram. Jr. and the State Legislature suppot a gas tax increase of
at least 3t per gallon.
