A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT,
CALIFORNIA, ENDORSING THE CONCEPT FOR AMTRAK SERVICE FROM
LOS ANGELES TO THE COACHELLA VALLEY.
WHEREAS, the governmental entities of Coachella Valley recog-
nize that there is a continuously heavy flow of travel in the
corridor between the City of Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley;
and
WHEREAS, it is recognized that there is a need in that
corridor for utilizing to the utmost safe and economical means
of transportation with the objective of reducing the drain upon
energy sources; and
WHEREAS, it is evidenC that rail service is an available
mode of transportation in that corridor which is safe, economi-
cally competitive, and expends a realtively low quantity of energy
per passenger mile; and
WHEREAS rail transportation is presently being used in that
corridor for passenger travel to a negligible extent, far below
its level of capacity, with no daytime schedule; and
WHEREAS, it is evident that there is a widespread interest
in and enthusiasm for daytime rail service between the City of
Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Pa1m Desert
urges the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) to
conduct the necessary studies as early as possible which may lead
to a future application wiCh the National Rail Passenger Corpora-
tion (AMTRAK) for the establishment of daytime rail service between
the City of Los Angeles and points in the Coachella Valley.
PASSED, APPROVED, and ADOPTED by the City Council of the City
of Palm Desert, California, at a regular meeting held on the 4th
day of December , 1980, by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: Newbrander, Puluqi, Snyder & Wilson
NOES: None
ABSENT: McPherson
ABSTAIN: None
