A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, ENDORSING A SPECIAL STATE-
WIDE ELECTION ON JUNE 2, 1981, FOR THE ELECTORATE
TO CONSIDER THE REFERENDUM ON THE PERIPHERAL CANAL.
WHEREAS, SB200 of the 1980 Session of the California
Legislature authorized construction of the 43-mile Peripheral
� Canal; and
WHEREAS, early construction of the Peripheral Canal is
vital to the we11-being of millions of Californians; and
WHEREAS, a referendum on the Canal has qualified for the
statewide ballot and is now scheduled for the June, 1982 election;
and
WHEREAS, as a result of the qualifying referendum, no
work can proceed on construction of the Canal until the election
is held, during which time construction costs of the Canal are
expected to increase by $90 million.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Palm Desert urges the State Legislature to order a
Special Statewide Election on June 2, 1981. for the purpose of
settling, in a timely fashion, the matter of the Peripheral Canal,
and thus avoiding major extra costs and avoiding jeopardy to the
health and safety of California's citizens.
