HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 83-010RESOLUTION NO. 83-10 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING AN ADEQUA'fE EDUCATION AND SCHOOL FACILITY FINANCING INITIATIVE BY THE GOVERNOR AND CITIZENS OF CALIFORNIA. ; WHEREAS, it has historically been the state's responsibility to fund school � construction for high growth areas through bond issues; and, WHEREAS, there has been $500 million approved towards modernization, upgrading and construction ($350 m.) of needed school facilities; and, WHEREAS, the last allocation (in 1982) for school construction was $110 m; and, WHEREAS, the Department of Education has statistics indicating that there is a need for over $1 billion in new school facilities construction requicements; and, R/HEREAS, there is a vast discrepancy noted between available funds and actual needs; and, WHEREAS, the state's financial support for these responsibilities requires special attention to assure that present allocations are maintained for their intended use; and, WHEREAS, the state's future commitments of financial support need to be clearly defined and secured; and, WHEREAS, the Governor made a commitment that education was one of his highest priorities. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Palm Desert, California, requests the Honorable Governor George Deukmejian's serious consideration towards the formulation of a gubernatorial task force to seek viable, long- term solutions to the financial support of education, costs of operation, new school facilities construction, existing school facilities rehabilitation, and proper maintenance and operation of existing school facilities. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Governor Deukmejian is encouraged to include strong representation from individua! local governments on the Task Force, as well as mass representation by the League of California Cities.
