A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING
PROPOSITION 99, THE TOBACCO TAX AND PROTECTION
ACT, ON THE NOVENlBER 8, 1988, BALLOT.
WHEREAS, more than 30,000 people die from tobacco-related
deaths every year in California; and
WHEREAS, tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death
and disease today; and
WHEREAS, more than one million registered voters have signed
to place Proposition 99, the Tobacco Tax and Protection Act, on
the November 1988 General Election ballot; and
WHEREAS, the passage of Proposition 99 would raise funds for:
research of cancer, lung, heart and other tobacco-related
diseases; education to prevent young people from using tobacco;
fire prevention; and environmental conservation and damage
restoration.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the Palm
Desert, California, that it supports Proposition 99 in its
entirety, and urges all the residents of the city to vote for the
same at the polls on November 8, 1988.
PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the Palm
Desert City Council on this 27th day of October, 1988 by the
following vote, to wit:

Whereas, tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death
and disease today, and
Whereas tobacco use in California costs our economy more than $6
billion a year in health and related costs, and
Whereas, more than one million registered voters have signed to
place Proposition 99, the Tobacco Tax and Protection Act, on
the November 1988 General Election ballot, and
Whereas, the passage of Proposition 99 would raise funds for:
research of cancer, lung, heart and other tobacco-related
diseases; education to prevent young people from using
tobacco; fire prevention; and environmental conservation and
damage restoration, now therefore be it
Resolved, (Mayor) of (Cit and the entire City Council will make
passage of Proposition 99 a major cancer control priority through
Novemher ?, 1988.

GREAT AI�RICAN SMOKEOUT
Whereas, the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout is
a lighthearted effort to encourage smokers to give up their
habit for 24 hours on Thursday, November 17
and
Whereas, eleven consecutive years, millions of smokers including
many in (Cit , have participated in this event,
and
Whereas, the health benefits of not smoking are substantiated and
well-known, and
Whereas, there are additional civic benefits such as a reduction
of the risks of accidental fire and illnesses related to
"secondhand smoking,"
Now, therefore, I, (Name , Mayor of Cit , do hereby proclaim
Thursday, November 17th, 1988 as the day of the Great American
Smokeout in (Cit , and in so doing urge all cigarette smokers
and tobacco users in the community to demonstrate to themselves
and their friends that they can quit if they wish by joining the
American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout.
