HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 93-079RESOLUTION NO. 93-79 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF' THE CITY OF PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, URGING GENERAL TELEPHONE (GTE) TO CONSIDEft THE COACHELLA VALLEY AS A SITE FOR RELOCATION/EXPANSION OF ITS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA OPERATOR SERVICES WHEREAS, General Telephone (GTE) is an important element in the Coachella Valley economy, with thousands of Coachella Valley-GTE subscribers; and WHEREAS, GTE currently employs approximately 110 telephone operator service positions in the Coachella Valley; and WHEREAS, GTE is currently evaluating sites for the consolidation of all its operator services in Southern California; and WHEREAS, the areas under consideration for consolidation might require GTE employees to commute out of the Coachella Valley or move their families closer to their work, causing considerable hardship to families with loss of revenues and jobs to the Coachella Valley; and WHEREAS, a Valleywide effort, coordinated by the Coachella Valley Economic Development Association (CVEDA), is taking place to urge GTE to reconsider the Coachella Valley as a site for these consolidation efforts . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Palm Desert, California, requests that : 1. GTE consider the Coachella Valley as a strong candidate for placement of its Southern California operator services; 2. Other Coachella Valley cities pass a resolution to support this effort to save local jobs and, revenues ; 3 GTE should recognize the following: - The Coachella Valley offers a unique pro business climate and serves as a triangle of opportunity between Los Angeles and San Diego; - The cost of living in the Coachella Valley is substantially below that of surrounding metropolitan areas of Los Angeles and San Diego; - The Coachella Valley offers a diverse and productive labor force and available skilled workers; - The Coachella Valley boasts an unequalled quality of life, lower crime rate, better air quality, less traffic, quality education, superior health care, and desert resort living. RESOLUTION NO. 93� PAGE 2 - Many of the Coachella Valley cities offer aggressive economic development programs, including financing incentives and business assistance. The Regional Business Assistance Center at the College of the Desert and CVEDA will work with GTE to provide a package of benefits and assistance.
