A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, TO THE
STATE OF CALIFORNIA BOARD OF EDUCATION
ENDORSING THE CONCEPT OF A CHARTER SCHOOL
FOR GEORGE WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
WHEREAS, the charter school concept was established by the
State of California and has been endorsed by the Governor; and
WHEREAS, the charter schools enable school districts to
eliminate buresucratic hindrances to innovative teaching; and
WHEREAS, the charter school concept incorporates the ideas and
desires of parents, school staff, and community members to directly
address the needs of a school's educational environment; and
WHEREAS, the Desert Sands Unified School District has approved
a charter school program for George Washington Elementary School;
and
WHEREAS, this school is within the City of Palm Desert; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Palm Desert applauds
all efforts of its School District to address the educational needs
of its citizens; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE RESOLVED that the City Council of the City
of Palm Desert, California, urges the California State Board of
Education approve the request of the Desert Sands Unified School
District and establish George Washington Elementary as a charter
school; and - -
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said City Council urges the State
Board of Equalization to increase the number of permitted charter
schools from its current 100 limit.

Desert City Council held on th3s 28th day of April, 1994, by the
followinq vote, to wit:
