HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 95-025o0 RESOLUTION NO. 95-25 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT ENDORSING THE CONCEPT OF A COACHELLA VALLEY NAFTA RAIL CORRIDOR. WHEREAS, the Coachella Valley's key industry, tourism, is enhanced by clean air and a pristine environment, and WHEREAS, the passing of NAFTA by the United States Congress has lowered barriers of free trade with Mexico, and WHEREAS, NAFTA related studies suggest establishment of a major new port of entry at Calexico, putting more than 2,500 trucks a day passing through the Coachella Valley, and WHEREAS, surface streets and highways between Calexico and Interstate 10 are insufficient to support the truck traffic, and WHEREAS, the truck traffic and inherent air pollution will adversely affect the local air quality and in turn negatively impact the tourism industry of the valley, and WHEREAS, the existing rail facilities from Calexico through the Coachella Valley, with upgrades, could provide an alternative transportation mode to highway truck transport, and WHEREAS, rail transport of "piggy -back" or containerized cargo would significantly reduce air pollution, and WHEREAS, the City of Palm Desert has been actively pursuing alternative transportation modes in order to maintain its air quality through low emission vehicles, alternative public transportation, and other innovations. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City -Council of the City of Palm Desert that it endorses and supports the establishment of a Coachella Valley NAFTA rail corridor including improvements to develop a double track system from Calexico to Riverside, California.
