HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 98-054RESOLUTION NO. 98-54 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, OPPOSES PROPOSITION 226 DUE TO THE SIGNIFICANT ADMINISTR.ATIVE BURDEN AND COST TO ALL CALIFORNIA TAXPAYING EMPLOYERS IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR WHEREAS, Proposition 226 is an initiative on the June 2, 1998, ballot; and WHEREAS, State Controller Kathleen Connell has stated that the initiative "...will impose significant administrative burden and cost to all California ta�cpaying employers — both in the public and private sector," and WHEREAS, fizrthermore, the Controller has also stated that the State may have to audit all deduction programs to determine which deducting entities (health, vision, dental benefits providers, credit unions, etc.) Would be affected by the initiative provision," and WHEREAS, Proposition 226 would shut working Californians out of the political process as soon as the November 1998 elections because the needless new bureaucratic forms it mandates can probably not be developed and implemented prior to the general election despite the Proposition taking effect on July 1, and WHEREAS, Proposition 226 creates a new and different set of rules for working Californians while allowing business and corporations to operate under the old rules therefore further tipping the balance of power, and WHEREAS, nearly sixty percent of the funding for Proposition 226 comes from out-of-state interests that have other political agendas including enacting school vouchers, eliminating social security and cutting Medicare. THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City of Palm Desert shall adamantly oppose Proposition 226 on the June 2, 1998, ballot.
