HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 98-058RESOLUTION NO. 98-58 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT OPPOSING REPEAL OF THE VEHICLE LICENSE FEE AND THE FURTHER EROSION OF LOCAL REVENUES BY THE STATE OF CALI FORN IA. WHEREAS, the Vehicle License Fee (VLF) provides the City of Palm Desert and other local governments discretionary funding not earmarked for specific purposes; and WHEREAS, the City of Palm Desert would lose over $1.2 million, impacting public safety, recreation, park maintenance and other desired programs; and WHEREAS, The County of Riverside would lose over $23.7 million, further impacting our citizens; and WHEREAS, while California voters have reserved VLF revenue for local government most measures currently calling for the repeal of VLF do not provide for dependable replacement from other funding sources; and WHEREAS, measures repealing the VLF would increase the estimated 1998-99 California state budget surplus of $4 billion through increased personal income tax while depleting local government funding; and WHEREAS, since the early 1990s cities have lost a net $2.3 billion, counties a net $5.9 billion, and special districts a net $1.5 billion, by actions of the State of California. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Palm Desert that it opposes legislation calling for the repeal of the Vehicle License Fee and requests the support of our assembly and senate legislative representatives.
