RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM
DESERT, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE CURRENT
LIMITATIONS ON TRUCK SIZE AND WEIGHT AS STATED IN
THE TRANSPORTATION EFFICIENCY ACT FOR THE 21ST
CENTURY (TEA-21)
WHEREAS, the Palm Desert City Council is committed to protecting the safety of
motorists on California's highways and protecting taxpayers' investment in the
infrastructure of roads which are part of the 40,000 mile National Highway System; and
WHEREAS, a recent United States Department of Transportation study found that
double and triple trailer trucks are at least 11 % more likely to be involved in a fatal accident
that a single trailer truck and that nationwide use of larger trucks would result in $53 billion
in bridge reconstruction costs and an additional $266 billion in congestion costs to
taxpayers; and
WHEREAS, according to research there is a strong statistical link between high
truck weights, longer trailer lengths, and the increased risk of fatalities; and
WHEREAS, House Resolution 3132 has been introduced in the United States
Congress to help preserve our highways and bridges and protect the safety of our roads
by extending the current Interstate Highway System truck weight limits to the National
Highway System and capping trailer length at 53 feet on the National Highway System.
RESOLUTION NO. 02-106
