HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 02-106RESOLUTION 02-106 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE CURRENT LIMITATIONS ON TRUCK SIZE AND WEIGHT AS STATED IN THE TRANSPORTATION EFFICIENCY ACT FOR THE 21ST CENTURY (TEA-21) WHEREAS, the Palm Desert City Council is committed to protecting the safety of motorists on California's highways and protecting taxpayers' investment in the infrastructure of roads which are part of the 40,000 mile National Highway System; and WHEREAS, a recent United States Department of Transportation study found that double and triple trailer trucks are at least 11 % more likely to be involved in a fatal accident that a single trailer truck and that nationwide use of larger trucks would result in $53 billion in bridge reconstruction costs and an additional $266 billion in congestion costs to taxpayers; and WHEREAS, according to research there is a strong statistical link between high truck weights, longer trailer lengths, and the increased risk of fatalities; and WHEREAS, House Resolution 3132 has been introduced in the United States Congress to help preserve our highways and bridges and protect the safety of our roads by extending the current Interstate Highway System truck weight limits to the National Highway System and capping trailer length at 53 feet on the National Highway System. RESOLUTION NO. 02-106 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Palm Desert that Palm Desert supports H.R. 3132 in establishing truck size and weight limitations on the National Highway System. PASSED, APPROVED, AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Palm Desert, California, at its Regular Meeting held on the 22nd day of August, 2002, by the following vote, to wit: AYES: CRITES, FERGUSON, SPIEGEL, KELLY NOTES: NONE ABSENT: BENSON ABSTAIN: NONE RICHARD S.
