ORDINANCE NO. 255
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT,
CALIFORNIA, ADOPTING THE 1979 EDITION OF
THE UNIFORM FIRE CODE.
The City Council of the City of Palm Desert,
California, DOES HEREBY ORDAIN as follows:
SECTION 1: That Section 15.16.010 of the Code of
the City of Palm Desert, California, be and the same is
hereby amended to read as follows:
15.16.010: Adoption of Uniform Fire Code. There
is adopted by the city for the purpose of prescribing regula-
tions governing conditions hazardous to life and property
from fire or explosion, that certain code known as the
Uniform Fire Code recommended by the Western Fire Chiefs
Association and the International Conference of Building
Officials, being particularly the 1979 edition thereof, and
the whole thereof, including appendix A-3 save and except
such portions as are deleted in this chapter, modified or
amended by Sections 15.16.070 through 15.16.100, of which
code not less than three copies have been and are now filed
in the office of the clerk of the city and the same are
adopted and incorporated as fully as if set out at length in
this chapter, and from the date on which the ordinance
codified in this chapter takes effect, the provisions thereof
shall be controlling within the limits of the city.
SECTION 2: That Section 15.16.070 of the Code of
the City of Palm Desert, California, be and the same is
hereby amended to read as follows:
15.16.070: Section 12.103(F) is added -- Exit
Obstruction. Section 12.103 Exit Obstruction, Paragraph F
is added to read as follows: "No person shall install,
place, keep or maintain any bars, grates or other obstructions
across the opening of any window of any sleeping room of any
building which may deter or hinder an occupant from using
the window as a means of escape from a fire originating
within the building."

SECTION 3: That Section 15.16.080 of the Code of
the City of Palm Desert, California, be and the same is
hereby amended to read as follows:
15.16.080: Section 10.307(F) is added -- Fire
Alarm Devices. Section 10.307, Installation, Paragraph F,
is added to read as follows: "A permit shall be required
for the installation of any device or system intended or
represented as detecting, giving warning of fire or transmitting
fire alarms. Exception: Permit shall not be required for
heat/smoke detector that sound a local alarm and have been
approved by the California State Fire Marshal."
SECTION 4: That Section 15.16.090 of the Code of
the City of Palm Desert, California, be and the same is
hereby amended to read as follows:
15.16.090: Section 10.207 is added -- Fire Lanes.
Section 10.207 is added to read as follows: "In all locations
where access for fire apparatus for fire suppression or
rescue purposes is unduly difficult or subject to obstruction,
the Chief of the Fire Department may designate Fire Lanes
and cause them to be posted as such.
"No person shall obstruct such Fire Lanes in
any manner that would deter or hinder the Fire Departarient
from gaining immediate access and use of such designated
Fire Lane."
SECTION 5: That Section 15.16.100 of the Code of
the City of Palm Desert, California, be and the same is
hereby amended to read as follows:
15.16.100: Section 10.301(F) is added -- Fire
Extinguishing Systems. Section 10.301, Paragraph F, is added
to read as follows: "A permit shall be required for the installa-
tion of fire sprinkler systems, dry chemical fire extinguishing
systems, and other fire extinguishing systems. Said permit
will be isused by the City Building Department."

SECTION 6: There is hereby added to the Code of
the City of Palm Desert, California, Uniform Fire Code
Sections 10.309(b), 2.B. and Section 10.309(b) 6, as follows:
Section 10.309(b), 2.B. is amended to read: When
the building has over 12,000 square feet of floor area,
regardless of stories.
Section 10.309(b) 6 is amended to delete: Exception:
Office buildings, municipal, police and fire stations.
SECTION 7: The City Clerk shall certify to the
passage and adoption of this ordinance and shall cause the
same to be published once in the Palm Desert Post, a newspaper
of general circulation, printed, published and circulated
within the City of Palm Desert, and the same shall be in
force and effect thirty (30) days after its adoption.
PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this 23rd day of
April , 1981, by the City Council of the City
of Palm Desert, California, by the following vote, to wit:
