AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING CHAPTER
15.16 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT
RELATING TO THE UNIFORM FIRE CODE.
The City Council of the City of Palm Desert, California, DOES HEREBY ORDAIN
as follows:
Section 1: That Section 15.16.010 15.16 of the Code of the City of Palm
Desert, California, be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows:
"15.16.010 Adoption of Uniform Fire Code. There is adopted by the city
for the purpose of prescribing regulations governing conditions hazardous to
life and property from fire or explosion, that certain code known as the Uniform
Fire Code recommended by the Western Fire Chiefs Association and the Internation-
al Conference of Building Officials, being particularly the 1982 edition thereof,
and the whole thereof, including appendix 1-5C save and except such portions as
are deleted in this chapter, modified or amended by Sections 15.16.070 through
15.16.100, and Sections 15.16.130 and 15.16.140, of which code not less than
three copies have been and are now filed in the office of the clerk of the city
and the same are adopted and incorporated as fully as if set out at length in
this chapter, and from the date on which the ordinance codified in this chapter
takes effect, the provisions thereof shall be controlling within the limits of
the city."
Section 2: That Section 15.16.101 be and the same is hereby added to the
Code of the City of Palm Desert to read as follows:
"15.16.011 Section 10.301 (C) added--- Water Supply Systems. The following
fire flow requirements are minimum standards for non -fire sprinklered buildings:
a. 1500 GPM for a two (2) hour duration for single family detached residences.
Fire hydrants must be within 250 feet of all portions of all buildings.
Fire hydrants must have one 4" outlet and two 2�" outlets for engine and
hose connections.
b. 2500 GPM for two (2) hour duration for multi -family dwellings. Fire hydrants
must be within 250 feet of all portions of all buildings. Fire hydrants
must have one 4" outlet and 2�" outlets for engine and hose connections.
c. 3000 GPM and above for commercial, industrial buildings. Fire hydrants
must be within 150 - 200 feet of all portions of all buildings and meet
the super Riverside County Fire hydrant standard for commercial structures.
These fire flow minimum standards may be reduced up to 50 percent when all
portions of a building are protected by an automatic sprinkler system.
"15.16.012 Section 10.309 (b) 5 added ---Automatic Sprinkler Systems.
An approved, automatic fire sprinkler system shall be installed in every
building hereafter constructed for Group A, B, E, R-1, H & I occupancies
where the gross floor is 5000 square feet or more, regardless of stories.
Fire resistive walls shall not be considered for reducing the gross floor
area of the building for the purposes of this code section."
NFPA 13-D Life Safety System may be installed in R-1 occupancies larger
than 5000 square feet in lieu of normal commercial 13-D fire suppression
systems. (R-1 occupancy in the Uniform Building Code includes hotels,
motels and apartment buildings.)

15.16013 Section 10.309 (b) 6 added. Install automatic fire sprinklers
in all buildings over two (2) stories in height or exceeding thirty (30 feet in
height.
Section 3: That Section 15.16.102 be and the same is hereby added to the
Code of the City of Palm Desert to read as follows:
"15.16.14 Subsection 10.312 (b) amend --- Standpipes Where Required -
Table No. 10.312. Occupancies three stories or more shall be required to have
a Class I system. Occupancies four stories or more shall be required to have
Class I and II (or III) system.
15.16.015 Subsection 10.312 (f) added. Occupancies having an existing
wet standpipe system which has been determined by the Fire Chief to need re-
placement, shall be required to replace the hose and nozzle appliances with
lined hose tested to 300 P.S.I. and variable fog nozzle."
Section 4: That Section 15.16.103 be and the same is hereby added to the
Code of the City of Palm Desert to read as follows:
"15.16.103 Subsection 10.313 (c) amend -- Buildings Under Construction
Where Required. Every building shall have domestic water supply available on
site and garden hose installed which will reach all portions of the combustible
construction areas. Every building three stories or more in height shall be
provided with all required Class III standpipes during construction. Every
building four or more stories in height shall be provided with all required
Class I standpipes during construction.
All standpipes shall be provided with Fire Department inlet connections
at accessible locations. Such standpipe systems shall be extended as construc-
tion progresses to within one floor of the highest point of construction having
secured decking or flooring.
Where construction height requires installation of a standpipe system, fire
pumps and water main connections shall be provided to serve the standpipe."
Section 5: That Section 15.16.104 be and the same is hereby added to the
Code of the City of Palm Desert to read as follows:
"15.16.104 Section 85.107 amend. EXCEPTION: U.L. approved multi -adapter
outlet boxes which are enclosed in cases and have a built-in 15 ampere circuit
breaker, may be utilized provided the other provisions of this section are met."
Section 6: The City Clerk shall certify to the passage and adoption of this
ordinance and shall cause the same to be published once in the Palm Desert Post,
a newspaper of general circulation, printed, published and circulated within the
City of Palm Desert, and the same shall be in force and effect thirty (30) days
after its adoption.
PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this 28th day of March 1985, by the City
Council of the City of Palm Desert, California, by the following vote, to wit:
