AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
PALM DESERT, CALIFORNIA, ADDING CHAPTER 5.82 TO
TITLE 5 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF PALM DESERT
REGULATING SPECIAL EVENT SALES IN RESIDENTIAL
DISTRICTS, AND DELETING SECTION 5.64.040,
SUBSECTION D OF TITLE 25 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY
OF PALM DESERT.
The City Council of the City of Palm Desert,
California, does hereby ordain as follows:
Section 1: That Subsection D of Section 25.64.04 of
the Code of the City of Palm Desert, be and the same is
hereby deleted.
Section 2: The purpose of this chapter is to permit
and regulate special event sales such as garage sales, yard
sales, patio sales and similar sales in residential
districts for temporary periods, in order to curtail
excessive traffic in such districts, the posting of illegal
signs associated with such sales that violate City and State
codes, and to prevent continuous commercial sales disguised

as special event sales.
Section 3: That Chapter 5.82 be and the same is hereby
added to the Code of the City of Palm Desert to read as
follows:
"Chanter 5.82
REGULATION OF SPECIAL EVENT SALES
Section 5.82.010 Special Event Definition.
Special event sales shall include garage
sales, yard sales, patio sales and other
similar event sales in residential districts
for the purpose of offering for sale
household or personal goods of the occupant
of the premises where such sale is permitted
and is not intended for commercial sale of
goods purchased elsewhere for such special
event sales.
Section 5.82.020 Permit Fee Request. No
person shall conduct a special event sale
within a residential district without having
procured a permit from the City to do so and
paying a fee of Ten Dollars ($10.00) for each
special event sale.

Section 5.82.030 Advertising by Signs.
Persons granted a permit to conduct a special
event sale shall comply with the provisions
of Chapter 25.68 regulating and controlling
the use of signs, and failure to comply shall
result in the permit being revoked and cause
to deny future requests for a permit.
Section 5.82.040 Terms of Permit. Any
permit granted under this chapter shall be
limited to seventy-two consecutive hours and
two such special event sales in any calendar
year.
Section 5.82.050 Penalties. Any person who
violates any provision of this chapter is
deemed guilty of an infraction."
Section 4: The City Clerk shall certify to the passage
and adoption of this ordinance and shall cause the same to
be published once in the Palm Desert Post, a newspaper of
general circulation, printed, published and circulated
within the City of Palm Desert, and the same shall be in
full force and effect thirty ( 30 ) days after its adoption.

1984, by the following vote, to wit:
