Sheila Gilligan addressed the Committee regarding the opportunity to be a sponsor for the Palm Springs Film Festival. Ms. Gilligan, Mayor Spiegel and City Manager Carlos Ortega met with Kevin Maguire, past Chairman of the Palm Springs Film Festival and Earl Greenberg, current chair of the Palm Springs Film Festival. During that presentation, it was mentioned that any event that comes to the Coachella Valley is good for all of the cities. Tiffany's on El Paseo is a sponsor of the Palm Springs Film Festival and will be hosting the opening reception on November 8th with Mary Hart, a resident of Palm Desert, and hostess of Entertainment Tonight. There may be an opportunity to bring several winning films to the Palme D'Or at the Westfield Shoppingtown and the McCallum Theatre. Mr. Greenberg had offered to make the showing of these films available to students in Palm Desert schools at either one of these venues. He would be speaking with Ted Giatis of the McCallum as to the feasibility of using the theatre for this purpose. In addition, these films could be shown at the Palme D'Or free or at discounted rates for Palm Desert residents. Ms. Gilligan added that the City of Indian Wells contributed $50,000 toward sponsorship, which includes tickets to the films, the Gala Event at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Everywhere the event is advertised the Palm Desert Logo and the Indian Wells Logo will be on that advertisement. The money would not be allocated from the Marketing budget; it would require a special appropriation by the City Council. The Sponsorship would be for this year only. The Marketing Committee would review the advertising and marketing plans. Chairman Rodriguez began discussion with support for Palm Desert sponsorship of a valley wide event. He stated a strong interest in providing an educational aspect to the City sponsorship through the schools in our City. Mr. Mandelbaum expressed support in that events held in the valley are of benefit to all cities. He agreed that attendees of the Festival would shop and dine in Palm Desert. Additionally, he believed that the exposure through Entertainment Tonight had a value of its own just as the Samsung Tournament national broadcast brought attention to the City of Palm Desert. MARKETING COMMITTEE AGENDA OCTOBER 26, 2004 PAGE 4 Mr. Shimer believed that participating in something valley wide was valid. He personally attends the film festival and the gala. He was in favor of supporting this event. Ms. Bowen said the one thing that sets Palm Desert apart as a tourist destination, throughout the entire valley, is the cultural sophistication. She added that Palm Desert could generate significant exposure to its community as a sponsor. She stated that the City is known for its commitment to its young people and supported the idea of including an educational aspect to any sponsorship that might be negotiated. Motion was made by Chairman Rodriguez to approve the request for $50,000 sponsorship with a recommendation that the Palm Springs Film Festival provide unique opportunities for Palm Desert, including events and/or screenings of the films, educational opportunities for Palm Desert's youth, and first right for Palm Desert restaurants to cater all welcome suites. Mr. Mandelbaum seconded the motion, which carried unanimously. VI. OLD BUSINESS A. UPDATE ON PALM DESERT MAGAZINE Kristy Kneiding distributed copies published by Palm Springs Life magazine is very beneficial to Pal B. PALM DESERT PROMISE m Mr. Mandelbaum suggested that the committee take a roll call vote for which one gets the most votes. He said he preferred choice number three. Mr. Darius liked number three as well. Gary Sherwin thought the most important attribute of a promise is that it gives a rich visual imagery in your head and still be distinctive enough so that decisions can be made within those parameters. Ms. Kneiding said that we need to use descriptive words that create a feeling rather than a verse that says what you can do while you're here. She suggested to the committee that they submit 5 to 10 words so she could create a list to bring back at the next meeting. MARKETING COMMITTEE AGENDA OCTOBER 26, 2004 PAGE 5 Ms. Bowen said the hard part has been done. A tag line needs to be developed, which can be recited in 30 seconds. Chairman Rodriguez asked if the Promise target group is residents or visitors. Ms. Kneiding said the target is both residents and visitors. Chairman Rodriguez asked the committee members to email 3, 5, or 10 words to Ms. Kneiding by Monday, November 1, 2004. VII.
