The El Toro Canyon Middle School in Thermal held a career day on March
23, 2004, and requested that the City participate in this event. When I
asked for any volunteers to help coordinate this event, Lauri quickly agreed
to the task, which is not part of her regular duties. Approximately 1,500
students came by the City's booth to get information within a span of five
hours.
Through Lauri's efforts, she was able to organize an excellent cross section
of City employees, allowing many kids to gain insight into the workings of
local government and possibly consider a public sector career. I would like
to recognize the fact that Laurie accepted this task without any hesitation
and displayed much enthusiasm. Her efforts were able to positively impact
youths that may never have the opportunity to learn about different career
paths they can undertake within local government.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
CITY OF PALM DESERT
I just wanted to thank you for your help in the design and approval process for our two
projects on Fred Waring Drive.
In a time when many cities seem to have an adversarial relationship with developers,
our experience with you was quite the opposite. We felt that we had a partner, rather
than an adversary, who was helping us achieve a mutual goal.
You are a true professional, and it is a pleasure working with you. Thank -you again for
all your help.
Sincere

Nominee: Jay Niemczk
Nominating Department: Public Works
Nominating Employee H. Spencer Knight
Reason for nominating employee:
Jay has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to public
service in his duties as Parks Maintenance Supervisor. No matter how
busy he is, he goes above and beyond the job requirements to meet
the public's needs while using the Civic Center Park. Jay deals with
City residents and visitors on a regular bases and not always under
favorable conditions. Yet he provides superior service with a positive,
professional and genuinely concerned attitude. The attached letter is
a testimony to Jay's efforts.

Re: Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 18, 2004
Dear Pat:
It is always a pleasure to work with you. You accommodate our Holocaust
survivors with the utmost courtesy and cooperation, and professionalism. I
am glad to know you.
With that in mind, a slight concern crossed my mind when I was advised that
due to health circumstances, you would be unable to be present to assist us
with those last minute details that seem to arise each year.
Jay Niemczk was wonderful. Before we could even ask for anything, he was
there with the answer with a charming smile on his face, and willing to
accommodate us in any and every way. He seemed to know where to be al all
times, anticipating our every need, and making the experience a great
pleasure. Our Holocaust survivors are very special people, and when you
receive their grand approval, it really means something!
When something bad happens, you're going to hear about it. When
something good happens, and it certainly did, I definitely want you to know
that too. And as much as I am crazy about working with you, Pat, Jay's terrific!
Thanks for making Yom Hashoah run smoothly and effectively. You have my
great appreciation.
Sincerely,
Trudi Licht

Nominating Department: Special Programs
Nominating Employee Robert Kohn
Reason for nominating employee:
During Deborah's 16 months with the City she has accomplished a
great deal. Two areas of the Public Art Program stand out as her
most significant accomplishments to date as follows:
Development of the Docent Program is an excellent additional public
service and Deborah's idea. Establishment of the purpose, guidelines
and training of the Docents was accomplished by Deborah. As many
of us know who have developed programs this is no easy task. The
program has been a success and the docents appear to be dedicated
and various groups are enjoying the tours.
The Exhibitions in the North Wing Gallery have been well organized
and planned for throughout the year. I for one, feel the exhibitions
have been awesome and based on the attendance at receptions and
comments received all participants agree.

Nominee: Richard Twedt
Nominating Department: Special Programs
Nominating Employee Robert Kohn
Reason for nominating employee:
Since Richard's arrival in April of 2002 the Palm Desert Public Art
Program has made significant strides in the area of national
recognition. Development of the Public Art Web Site, Artist Registry
(on-line), and national advertising campaign has provided Palm
Desert with significant exposure. This is evidenced by the number of
contacts and quality of art submittals received for the various
projects.
The Art in Public Places Commission would also agree that Richard
has had a positive impact on their ability to move forward on projects
and make decisions necessary to maintain the quality of the El Paseo
Exhibition and the overall art collection.
