HomeMy WebLinkAboutC22080 Creation of Mural for the PD Library Community RoomCITY OF PALM DESERT COMMUNITY SERVICES STAFF REPORT REQUEST: CONSIDERATION TO APPROVE HONORARIUMS TO THE THREE FINALISTS FOR THE LIBRARY MURAL PROJECT SUBMITTED BY: PUBLIC ART PROGRAM DATE: JUNE 24, 2004 CONTENTS: LIST OF SUGGESTIONS Recommendation: By Minute Motion, approve honorariums in the amount of $1,000 to each of the three finalists for the Library mural project from account #436-454-30-92. Executive Summary: At its meeting on June 16, 2004, the Art in Public Places Commission unanimously approved $1,000 honorariums for each of the three finalists for the Library mural project. Each artist will create a final color rendering of his/her mural design, which will be presented to the Art in Public Places Commission for review. The Commission will prioritize the three renderings for City Council's final selection. Discussion: The Art in Public Places Commission received forty entries for the national competition for the public Library mural project. The Commission selected three finalists from the entries. The three proposals were presented to the Library Committee, which had several suggestions for what could be incorporated into the mural's final design. Each artist will be asked to create a final color rendering of his/her design for the mural, which will incorporate the suggestions of the Library Committee as well as the original items in the Request for Proposal. More children represented a. Listening to story tellers 2. Music represented a. Many concerts in the room ranging from pianists, bluegrass, harp and violin. 3. Don't need image of Girl Scouts, they don't meet in the room. 4. Natural science presentations given weekly in the room a. Maybe a ranger or representative of the Living Desert b. Local flora and fauna 5. Harry Potter figure could be replaced with other story book characters 6. Don't need recognizable individuals, i.e. COD Board or Beth Zeigler. 7. Possibly use imagery of what was there before the library, "The Date Ranch". 8. Maybe depict a progression of ages from children to seniors as the mural unfolds from beginning to end. sgaia-619 2f
