STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: REQUEST BY THE PALM DESERT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
RELATIVE TO THE GOLF CART PARADE
DATE: May 13, 2004
CONTENTS: CORRESPONDENCE FROM SUSAN HARVEY, EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR, PARADE PLANNING COMMITTEE
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, approve a change in date for the Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade
from the 1st Sunday in November to January beginning in 2006.
Executive Summary:
Approval of this request by the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce would move the date
of the Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade from the 1st week in November to a weekend
in January.
Background:
For the past several years, the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce has sponsored a Golf
Cart Parade either the 1st or 2nd Sunday in November. As the community grows, and
demographics change, Parade Charities Inc., the entity responsible for organizing the
parade and distributing attendant funds, had adjusted various aspects of this event to keep
its activities current and to allow it to grow with the community.
The Chamber has requested that the Parade be held in January as no competing parades
are held at that time allowing for possible broader community support, an opportunity for
schools to have more time to plan and build their entries, and greater visitor population to
the Palm Desert community. This date would mark the beginning of the season of
tournaments and, there would be a greater opportunity for golfers and other celebrities to
participate in the Parade. The El Paseo Merchants Association has also endorsed the
change and the City's Public Works Department has no objection.

beginning in 2006, understanding that the 2004 Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade will be held
on Sunday, November 7th and there will not be a Parade in calendar year 2005.
