TWEDT DATE: MAY 13, 2004 CONTENTS: COPIES OF THE TWENTY "ARTISTIC BENCH" DESIGNS Recommendation: By Minute Motion: 1. To accept and purchase the twenty "Artistic Bench" designs selected by the Art in Public Places Commission for $250 each from the respective artists. Appropriate the funds from Account #436-4650-454-3092. 2. To sponsor one or more of the designs selected by the Art in Public Places Commission, not to exceed $10,000 for the total project. Appropriate the funds from Account #436-454-4001. Executive Summary: The Art in Public Places Commission held a special meeting on April 7, and selected 20 designs from 168 entries for the "Artistic Bench" program. They selected two designs and three alternates, to be sponsored by the Commission, in an amount not to exceed $10,000 for the total project. Discussion: This project got started several months ago when the Art in Public Places Commission decided to commission 20 designs for artistic benches, which will be sponsored, fabricated, and placed along El Paseo. A national call was sent out to artists, arts organizations, and galleries for proposals. On April 7, the Commission selected 20 of the 168 entries. The "Artistic Benches" will be created when a "sponsor" selects and pays for the expenses involved in fabricating, shipping, and installing the artwork. The sponsor will own the bench, and when appropriate, assist in the selection of the location for its placement on El Paseo. Each bench will have a small plaque installed identifying the sponsor, artist, and title of the bench. The original artistic bench will remain in its location; however, if the bench is designed as a limited edition, the sponsor and artist can sell copies of it. Twedt Public Arts Manager City of Palm Desert 73-510 Fred Waring Palm Desert, CA 92260 Dear Mr. Twedt and the Palm Desert Public Art Committee Members, My name is Michele vandenHeuvel. I am a bronze sculptor from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Enclosed please find my submission materials for the art benches on El Paseo. It is my belief that Public Art, and sculpture in particular should welcome us as community, and be easily relatable to all of us, from all ages and walks of life. Given this, I have developed an interest in creating what I call "interactive" sculptures; sculpture that not only is fun, and hopefully that delights the viewer, but sculpture that is touchable and tells a story. Animals are a foremost theme in my work, because I have found that they have a universal appeal, particularly animals that have been "humanized". In doing so, it has been my experience that the sculpture can become "real"for the viewer; it also serves to create the welcoming atmosphere which I strive to attain, and invites the viewer to sit, linger and "visit"with the work, as they walk and shop along El Paseo. My sculptures can be placed outdoors or indoors, on one of my hand sculpted bronze "bird/snail" benches, or on a colorful "Keystone Ridge" powder coated bench. (My bronze bench or the powder coated benches come in varying lengths). Maintenance is minimal; twice a year washing and waxing. Thank you for the opportunity to submit for this project. One of my greatest pleasures as a Public Art artist is working with the community, arts boards, city boards, architects and contractors, as we as a group "see the possibilities!" It is my hope that the artwork chosen for El Paseo would welcome the community and visitors in an atmosphere of joy, and would help to spark the imagination in all. teredyazcvni (-1P / Mic ele vandenHeuvel - (505) 344-9154 - benebronzeaol.com 1418 PIMENTON OR NE • ALBUQUERQUE, NM 81113 • (505) 344.9154 • www.henehronze.com • henehronze4aol.com 4 i;. i t h t' '+. .: !.,;.. .,... fir+. • tq r.• ':eta r• •; .4} Y: r '' 4r, r • • .... _ 44, . r .... Constructed of durable, maintenance-free stainless steel. The seating area of each Letter Chair is the same height as a standard dining room chair, (18 inches), and offers ergonomic comfort while discouraging the idea of trio down. Each LETTER CHAIR varies in width from 18" to 24",with a height of 36",and a depth of 24". The placement of the Letter Chain in the El Pasio Shopping district will not impede the flow pedestrian traffic ix any way. The LETTER CHAIRS have no sharp or dangerous edges and would be easy to clean and vandal resistant. These LETTER CHAIRS are more than just a place to sit: they are informative, interactive, comfortable, and best of all, Fun. They would give the dens of the City of Palm Desert a distinctive visual experience, and one that would stand out in the mind of everyone. I do hope that the good people of the City of Palm Desert will consider my proposal, and give me the opportunity to create a sculptural statement as unique as the people of the City of Palm Desert California. I am a sculptor with experience on public projects, and I'm a husband who hates maintenance so I build things strong and easy to care for. My bio and resumes are enclosed, and my web site shows a good bit of my work if you're interested in more background. I'm currently the Visiting Artist at The Arboretum in Lexington, Kentucky, and one of my projects there is creating benches. I'll be using the same approach detailed below and similar to the photos enclosed. The enclosed entry to your competition shows an approach to design that I would use if selected: laminated granite tops that are supported by sculptural assemblages of stainless steel. We are a two-person collaborative artist team, dedicated primarily to the creation of mosaic sculpture, installations and architectural ceramics. We have made great effort in the development of our artistic process for the application in public art. Our work can endure environmental conditions with minimal maintenance,_making it an exceptional choice for public spaces. Our tile is hand- formed to honor the setting and use of each application. Each design takes advantage of the tiles durability, adorning interior and exterior surfaces and structures. Complimentary elements can include concrete, metal, wood, glass, paint, light, water and landscape. Our Tinost-curs work includes-several permanent public-installations-including a tile mural and a number of mosaic sculptures. This work is primarily constructed from concrete and steel armatures, covered with hand-built mosaic tile. The process creates an intricately detailed piece with the durability required for public installation. Our background in Public and residential tile fabrication gives us technical experience and the familiarity of working with a design team. Richard L. Twedt, Public Arts Manager City of Palm Desert 73-510 Fred Waring Palm Desert, CA 92260 March 26, 2004 Dear Richard: Enclosed are three proposals for the "Art Benches on El Paseo Project." I did not include pricing information because I didn't see anything about that in the online prospectus, however, if you need more information on that subject, I'll work up some figures for you. Although my commissioned work has mostly been figurative in subject matter, I have recently begun working in glass and enameling. The possibilities in these media are endless and fascinat- ing. If I were to be awarded a commission to produce any of the benches I've proposed, I would go directly to the Kohler foundry in Minnesota. Please feel free to call me if you need more information. I'd also be happy to furnish references. This seems like an exciting opportunity to create some functional art. I look forward to seeing what happens with it, and to hearing back from you. My success in creating site-specific public art is evidenced by Morphogenesis, a concrete sculpture in the courtyard of the Performing Arts Center at California State University, Chico (2000). This award-winning project has been well received by the community of Chico and visitors to the city alike. Morphogenesis was inspired, in part, by the lava flows and plant life of the region. To construct this sculpture, over 400 individual units were molded in concrete, then installed with masonry and steel reinforcement (rebar). The color was integrated with the concrete and masonry, so that regular wear does not change its appearance. I have included a copy of a review of Morphogenesis from Sculpture magazine. • March, 29, 2004 Richard L. Wu-wei within Taoism refers to action that is spontaneous and effortless. The geologic form of the sculpture appears to have been eroded with time almost as if rain or wind patiently revealed the final form. In addition, the material of the sculpture, bronze, also effortlessly changes coloration, ranging from a golden yellow, a deep brown, and a greenish coloration with time. The principle of wu-wei also refers to the interconnectedness between oneself and one's environment. The viewer's relation to nature is portrayed through the stacking of the strata. When the viewer sits on the bench they become the final layer of information and thus connected to the sculpture. wu-wei, is derived from a previous sculpture titled ahimsa. Both benches are similar in form but differ in a few ways. The strata that make up wu-wei's form are altered, resulting in different thickness of layers. Unlike ahimsa, wu-wei has no etched imagery but relies solely on intricacy of form. The bronze material is maintenance free and resistant to all kinds of weather. The final price for this piece including fabrication, artist/labor fee, and transportation is $9,500.
