REQUEST: SUBMITTED BY: DATE: ATTACHMENT: CITY OF PALM DESERT COMMUNITY SERVICES STAFF REPORT APPROVAL FOR OUT-OF-STATE TRAVEL FOR THE ART IN PUBLIC PLACES COORDINATOR TO THE ANNUAL AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS CONVENTION PRECONFERENCE "CIVIC CATALYST". RICHARD L. TWEDT, PUBLIC ARTS MANAGER MAY 27, 2004 PRECONFERENCE BROCHURE BUDGET Recommendation: By Minute Motion, approve out-of-state travel for the Public Art Coordinator to attend the preconference for the 2004 Americans for the Arts Public Art Convention in Washington, DC from July 14-July 17, 2004. The funds are available in account number 436-4650- 454-3120. Executive Summary: The Americans for the Arts 2004 Annual Convention's preconference "Public Art: Civic Catalyst" is the only conference nationally that is devoted to issues of public art programs. The kind of issues that will be addressed by presenters and panelists are common to all public art programs; learning about solutions to these issues will strengthen the public art program of the City of Palm Desert and the Art in Public Places Commission. The preconference also offers a unique opportunity to network with other members of the public art field. Submitted By: and L. Twedt, Robert Kohn, blic Arts Manager Director of Special Programs Staff Report Approval for out-of-state travel May 27, 2004 Page 2 Sheila Gilligan, ssis ;;li ity Manager, Community Services Approved By: Carlos Ortega, Ci ,' anager Paul Gibson, Finance Director ICIPATE PUBLIC ART: Public art is an ideal vehicle for expressing unique community identity, activating dialogue, and engaging diverse groups in shaping civic space. Also featured are the Year in Review, a survey of the year's most innovative and exciting public art projects; the presentation of the Public Art Network Award; and evening receptions at the City Museum of Washington, DC, and the Art Museum of the Americas at the Organization of American States. 7:30 PM-9:30 PM 8:00 AM 8:25 AM-8:50 AM 9:00 AM-9:10 AM 9:15 AM-10:00 AM 10:05 AM-12:05 PM 12:15 PM-1:10 PM WEDNESDAY, JULY 14, 2004 ART AND ABOUT: AN INSIDER'S TOUR OF OUR NATIONAL MALL Open to preconference attendees and guests. $29-Limited participation; register early!
