The presentation is set for the November 18th Council meeting. If you need more information let me know. We are pleased to announce that Palm Desert Students have displayed exceptional talent in their artwork entries. It was difficult, but we finally managed to choose winners. We have chosen one grand prize winner that will receive a bike and five Runner Up winners that will receive a $20 gift certificate. The winners are as follows: Grand Prize - Natalie Gramer - Carter Elementary Runner Up - Chloe Folena - Carter Elementary Runner Up - Chloe Sharp - Carter Elementary Runner Up - Michael Chambers - Carter Elementary Runner Up - Christian Abraham Ramirez Chaparro - Lincoln Elementary We will be enlarging the grand prize winners artwork to 18" by 24" and the runners up will be enlarged to 11" by 14". Please join us during a special City Council recognition event to celebrate the accomplishments and artwork of the five student winners from Desert Sands Unified School District who have displayed leadership in spreading the message about smart energy management to their family, friends, and neighbors. POrg NOWT California has a new alert system called Flex Your Power NOW./that is designed to help people learn how to conserve electricity in times when power reserves are low. This will help prevent power outages and rolling blackouts. The Energy Coalition, and its PEAK Student Energy Actions program, has partnered with Flex Your Power NOW/ help spread awareness about the FlexNOW./alert system to California's teachers, students, and their families. How Does the "Flex Your Power Nowt" Alert System Work? 1. The California Independent System Operator (ISO) will trigger the Flex Your Power Now! alert and notify local radio stations and the Flex Your Power Now/team. 2. The alert will be broadcast over radio stations and disseminated using other contact systems, such as during morning announcements at PEAK schools. 3. Californians will be asked to reduce their use of lighting, air conditioners, and major appliances until after 7 p.m. What are the Four PEAK Student Energy Actions? • Plugging in to New Technology • Cutting Energy Waste • Shifting Energy Use Off Peak Demand Times • Planning for a Healthy Energy Future Poster Contest Rules: Topic: How can people use the Four PEAK Student Energy Actions to respond to a Flex Your Power NOW./alert? Guidelines: • All K - 8 grade students in participating PEAK School districts in Southern California are eligible to participate. • Entries must be topic -based and include the phrase, -Flex Your Power NOW!" • Entries should be artistic or slogan -oriented. • Artwork must be original and created by the student. • All entries must be submitted on the Contest Entry Form or attached to the Entry Form on a separate 84 x 11 in. sheet of paper. Entry Deadline: Entries can be mailed to The Energy Coalition or dropped off at your district's PEAK Lead office. All entries must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2004. A first prize winner will be selected from each participating school district. Winners will receive a new beach cruiser bicycle! Age will be taken into consideration during the judging process.
