HomeMy WebLinkAboutRequest for Contribution - Coachella Valley Tournament of Roses Parade FloatCITY OF PALM DESERT
ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER/COMMUNrTY SERVICES
INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
To: Carlos L. Ortega, City Manager
From: Sheila R. Gilligan, Assistant City Manager for Community Services
Date: November 9, 2004
Subject:: Coachella Valley Rose Parade Float
Councilman Kelly referred Parade organizer Darlene Dolan to me relative to whether or
not the City would be a sponsor for the subject float. While people have tried this in the
past, it has not met with the success that Ms. Dolan and her organization have
accomplished this year.
The group needs to raise $60,000 to augment donations already made. The float will
be the first entry to have a "riding band", and the student musicians will play on the float
which will feature a desert theme indicative of our valley.
Ms. Dolan advises that the City of Indio has contributed $1,000, the City of Coachella
$5,000, the City of LaQuinta $5,000, and the City of Indian Wells $10,000. She seeks a
$5,000 contribution from the City of Palm Desert.
This request was received this date and because of the timing associated with the Rose
Parade, Ms. Dolan seeks an answer at next week's Council meeting.
I have attached all of the information provided to me. If you concur, we can place it on
the November 18, 2004, agenda for City Council consideration.

ROSE BOWL PARADE
We, in the Coachella Valley, have a rare opportunity to expose oar desert and businesses
to the eudiarce of the Rose Bowl Parade. There are conununities That hive been waiting
years for the opportunity to be in the parade and we wore chosen over them. we were
chosen because of our cbikiren's Pentatia Strad Down Orchestra, a unique organization of
lads_ The float builders (Fiesta Floats) see a real opportunity to win a major design prize
by designing the Boat around OUT children's Steel Oixi sstra_
To make this opportunity become reality, it wtl1 'take an investment of S200,000. To
reach this amount we need the help of individuals end businesses across the attire Valley.
There is a return on this tax deductible investment and t world like to enumerate some of
thane.
There will be 9 networfa broadcssdng the parade five and many will replay it several
times over. The "lives air time fix the float is ° peeped to be approximately 3 minutes for
each of the 9 aatworks. It would be hared to evaluate the value of that much TV time
broadcast into 56 countries.
The exposure will draw tourists, new families and businesses to the Coachella Valley that
will benefit everyone. It would be impossible For our Convention and Visitors Authority
and Coachella Economic Partnership to generate this kind of terposure and they spend
several millions cif dollar: annually uaily to get our good name out.
Remember, we are only tanning about raising S200.000 of which the first S50.000 has
been donated and used for the down payment on the float. We need to pay the balance
before the end of the year. The local schools seal cover the costs of transporting the kids
and their equipment that aide OP the Bost.
The sponsorship opporwnhlos will include a none of die sponsor and logo in the Rose
Bowl Program, a Sill page ad in the Desen Sun thanking sponsors. pictures of the float
with tbt sponsors logo displayed, VIP tickets to the parade, tickets to the Rase Bowl
game and an invitation to a pre -event party.
Our sponsor ships begin at S10,000, so be one of the first to subsaibe.
This is a rare opportunity to help the Valley, bdp kids and to get a return an your
investment.
