Out of State Travel - Food and Wine Classic - Aspen June 10-12, 2005
Lc, CITY OF PALM DESERT COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: APPROVAL OF OUT OF STATE TRAVEL DATE: April 14, 2005 CONTENTS: FOOD AND WINE CLASSIC IN ASPEN PROGRAM Recommendation: By Minute Motion, approve out-of-state travel for Palm Desert's Marketing Manager, Public Art Coordinator, Senior Management Analyst/Community Services and a member of the Marketing Committee to attend the 2005 Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, which is scheduled to be held in Aspen, Colorado, June 10-12, 2005. Funds are available in fiscal year 2004/05 accounts 110-4110-410-3121, 110-4417-414-3120, 110-4416-414-3061, and 436-4650-454-3120 to cover registration, airfare, accommodations and other incidental expenses associated with attendance at this event and no appropriation is needed or requested. Executive Summary: The City of Palm Desert has been approached by the Desert Springs, JW Marriott Resort & Spa to participate as a host site for an upscale art/jazz/wine festival beginning in 2006. Approval of this request will allow appropriate staff and a Marketing Committee member to travel to Aspen to investigate the feasibility of becoming involved in such an activity. Background: Each year, various cities throughout the United States host and produce upscale events which include some type of a combination of jazz, art, cooking demonstrations, wine tasting, and other associated activities. The focus of such a festival, which would be produced as a signature event, would be to provide an opportunity to draw visitors from throughout the United States to the host community during a shoulder season. The visibility that such an event would provide Palm Desert could be a be a long term and lucrative source of tourism dollars and could further establish the City's reputation as a leader in the arts. Before the City commits to serving as a host site for such an undertaking, a significant amount of research should be conducted. Therefore, it is requested that appropriate staff and a Marketing Committee member attend a similar event to determine if and how such an event would fit into the community and benefit the City of Palm Desert in both the long and short term from an art, marketing, and special events perspective. After this investigataive trip has been completed, a thorough evaluation of the feasibility of City participation will be held with an already established community committee, which will be responsible for producing this event should it be determined to be beneficial to Palm Desert. The program for the 2005 Food and Wine Classic in Aspen is attached with the recommendation that the City Council approve out-of-state travel for Palm Desert's Marketing Manager, Public Art Coordinator, Senior Management Analyst/Community Services and a member of the Marketing Committee. Funds are available in fiscal year 2004/05 accounts 110-4110-410-3121, 110-4417-414-3120, 110-4416-414-3061, and 436- 4650-454-3120 to cover registration, airfare, accommodations and other incidental expenses associated with attendance and no appropriation is needed or requested.
