STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: Approval for Purchase of Compressed Natural Gas Fuel
SUBMITTED BY: Tom Bassler, Maintenance Services Manager
VENDOR: Clean Energy
3020 Old Ranch Parkway
Seal Beach, Califomia 90740
DATE: April 14, 2005
Recommendation:
By minute motion, approve the purchase of compressed natural gas (CNG) for fleet
vehicles from Clean Energy. The purchase will be ongoing annually until other sources
are available.
Discussion:
Thirty-two of the city's fleet vehicles operate utilizing CNG fuel. Within the Coachella Valley there are
five commercial CNG refueling stations all operated by Clean Energy. Clean Energy evolved from the
company that assisted SunLine Transit Agency in developing the CNG infrastructure within our area.
The company installed and operates the public CNG facility at Waste Management where the city
obtains the majority of its CNG fuel. The City's franchise agreement with Waste Management
provides for a substantial discount on fuel purchased at that facility.
Presently, Clean Energy is the only vendor in our area for this altemative energy fuel. The City has
vehicle -fueling cards and is invoiced monthly with a complete purchase detail by Clean Energy.
Funds are budgeted annually in account 110-4331-413-2170 for the purchase of CNG and other
automotive fuels.
