DATE: December 8, 2005 SUBMITTED BY: Carlos L. Ortega, City Manager Recommendation: That the City Council submit the name of the Palm Desert Health Sciences Building as provided for in Section 3 of the Funding Agreement between the Redevelopment Agency and The Foundation For California State University, San Bernardino, and The Board of Trustees of the California State University (CSUSB). Background: On October 27, 2005, the Redevelopment Agency approved the Funding Agreement between The Foundation for California State University, San Bernardino, and The Board of Trustees of the California State University. Section 3 of such agreement provides that the City meet and confer with the Dean of the Palm Desert Campus to determine the naming opportunity for the Off Campus Building, a.k.a. the Health Sciences Building. Cal State University, San Bernardino, maintains the right to approve the name. The agreement further states that CSUSB agrees to use the City name for so long as the Off Campus Building is owned and/or operated by CSUSB or a successor institution. The Foundation shall bear the sole cost and expense of installing all signs identifying the Off Campus Building by the City Name, including street or directional signs. In addition, all directional and information signs shall refer to the Off Campus Building by the City Name. The Foundation and CSUSB may use their names in conjunction with the City Name. I have recently been contacted by Fred Jandt, Dean of the Palm Desert Campus, with a request that the City submit a name for the building for CSUSB's consideration. The reason for the request is that the University is proceeding with the design and the name of the building needs to be forwarded for their Board of Trustees meeting in January, 2006.
