MINUTES
NOVEMBER 29, 2004
Administrative Conference Room
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Jan Holmlund called the meeting of the Historic Preservation Committee to
order at 10:05 a.m.

III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Committee Member Kent Routh moved to approve the minutes of the October
25, 2004 meeting as submitted. It was seconded by Committee Member Minnie
Surles and unanimously approved 4-0.
IV. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
A. Prior to the meeting being called to order, Rachelle Klassen, Clerk &
Recorder, swore in Committee Member Bob Pitchford.
B. CHAIR REPORT
1. Washington School - Chair Jan Holmlund indicated that a time line has
been established for the Washington Charter School, and she will
provide a research paper to the Committee members.
Richard Twedt, Public Arts Manager, indicated that the Washington
School fence is scheduled to be taken down from December 20 through
January 2 under his supervision. It will be stored at the City's Corporate
Yard until there is an appropriate facility for it to be installed.

Hal Rover, President of the Historical Society, indicated that the
Historical Society would like to be placed on the list for consideration to
use the fence around the Historical Society building. Richard Twedt,
Public Arts Manager, said he would remeasure the fence and look at the
Historical Society property. He also said that the final party for the
Washington School is Saturday, December 4, 2004, if Committee
members are interested in attending.

indicated that this meeting will be in the Spring and she will bring the
information to the Committee. Hal Rover said that the State association
of the historical society is also holding a meeting in Palm Desert on
February 15-19, 2005 and is being sponsored by the Coachella Valley
Museum in Indio.
Mail and Materials — Chair Jan Holmlund said that the Committee has
received a lot of information. She encouraged the Committee Members
to review the following two documents "Instructions for Recording
Historical Resources" and "Comprehensive State Wide Plan for
California" because they are very important to the work that needs to be
done. She also indicated that the Committee will not have the resources
needed to do the necessary footwork and is hopeful that they can interest
the College of the Desert history classes, high schools, and/or interns in
order to help with the research.
4. Amir Hamidzadeh, Director of Building and Safety, said that he would
look into the City's student/intern program to see if they can assist
committees and/or commissions. He gave each committee member a
copy of the "BrightSide" article describing the Committee and its purpose.
Amir also indicated that he was going to check into the possibility of
providing line items in the mid -year budget for the Historic Preservation
Committee and asked members to provide him with a list of items and
justifications.
C. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS
Chair Jan Holmlund indicated that Jim West is on vacation and has an
approved absence so there will be no subcommittee report at this meeting.
D. INDIVIDUAL COMMITTEE MEMBER REPORTS/RESPONSE
1. Committee Member Kent Routh provided the Committee with the first site
research article for the `BrightSide." He indicated there would be future
articles on other sites written by other Committee Members. Amir
Hamidzadeh, Director of Building and Safety said that he would get the
deadlines for the `BrightSide." Committee Member Kent Routh also said
that he is working on a list of historical sites to be researched.

2 Committee Member Minnie Surles brought the Committee up-to-date on
her research of the Homme residence at Monterey Country Club and the
COD President's house. She will be doing additional research at the
Historical Society and then will be preparing a final report.
Chair Jan Holmlund said that the Historical Preservation Committee
needs to look at organizational development and community and public
relations plans. An intern and other people in the community doing
historical research would help the Committee and make the public aware
of the Committee's purpose. In the future the Committee will want to look
at a speaker's bureau and possible tours of historical sites.
V. OLD BUSINESS
A. Facade Enhancement Program — Bryce White could not attend. This item
moved to next meeting.
B. Coordination with City Departments — This item is in progress by Amir
Hamidzadeh, Director of Building and Safety. There is a draft copy of the
plaqueing process will be distributed to all City department heads for input,
and by the January meeting, Amir Hamidzadeh, Director of Building and
Safety, should have a progress report.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
A. Doc Gurley house plaque — Chair Jan Holmlund indicated this is
dependent upon the historical research and approval by appropriate City
Departments.
VII. PUBLIC COMMENTS ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA
None
VIII. CONFIRM NEXT MEETING DATE AND ADJOURN
The Historic Preservation Committee's next meeting is Monday, January 31, 2005,
10:00 a.m. in the Administrative Conference Room. It was decided the Committee
would not meet in December. There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
