VII. OLD BUSINESS
A. STATUS REPORT ON THE COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT.
Public Arts Manager Richard Twedt introduced himself to the Committee.
He said the AIPP Commission met this morning and prioritized the two
remaining proposals for the Library mural. One artist had dropped out of
the competition, leaving two finalists. He said AIPP gave Susan Smith -
Evans' mural the highest priority and Jeff Whipple is second.
Member Kermode felt Susan Smith -Evans' renderings were too busy. She
preferred the work by Jeff Whipple.
Member Manor asked if AIPP had any suggestions regarding the murals.
Mr. Twedt said they did not. She suggested that the performers not be the
prominent elements in the mural.
Ms. Ziegler commented that Ms. Smith -Evans drew from photographs in
the Library's archives.
Councilmember Benson suggested that fact cards be made and placed by
the mural after it's installed so visitors would know the history of the
renderings therein.
Member Kermode felt Mr. Whipple's mural had a gentler and softer feel to it
and was more aesthetically pleasing to her.
Ms. Klassen said the recommendation by the Library Promotion Committee
would be forwarded to the City Council for final approval.
Motion by Member Manor to prioritize the mural by Susan Smith -
Evans with the following modifications: relocate the storyteller to a
Tess prominent position in the mural and replace with another figure.
Seconded by Joan Beasley. Motion carried 2-1, with Member
Kermode voting no.

VIII. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. Council Member Jean Benson
Councilmember Benson mentioned that the AIPP met this morning. She
said the recommendation on the mural from AIPP and this Committee
would be taken to City Council.
She also commented that she had picked up an "Art on the 1st Saturday of
the Month for Kids" brochure in her travels. The program introduces art to
children at an early age. She thought this might be something the Library
Committee would be interested in pursuing.

Ms. Ziegler passed out the Library's statistics for May and June of 2004.
She said Ms. DeSantis is out on medical leave. Mary Arnold has been
helping with the events, and she was grateful to have her help. Her update
of other employee changes at the Library included Patrick Alcala the new
Computer Instructor/Technician.
She reported that the "Youth Summer Reading Program" had a lot of
activity and participation. Palm Desert's Target store donated the bicycle
that was given away.
