Approve Out of State Travel to Melbourne, Australia for City
Engineer to Attend the Institute of Transportation Engineers Annual
Conference.

Recommendation:
By minute motion: authorize out of state travel for the City Engineer to
attend the Institute of Transportation Engineers Annual Conference in
Melbourne, Australia, August 7 —10, 2005.
Executive Summary:
The City Engineer is an active member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, a
professional organization supporting safe and efficient transportation. The benefits of
attending at the annual conference include exposure to the latest developments in
transportation engineering, as well as promoting Palm Desert as a leader in the field.
As our community continues to grow, the information presented at these conferences
becomes and invaluable tool in meeting the needs of our city. This meeting also offers
the rare occasion to observe practices of another advanced country regarding
transportation issues.
Costs include conference registration at $795, flight at $1,750, hotel at $175 per night,
and travel costs, including meals, tips, parking, mileage, phone, etc., estimated to be
approximately $125 per day. This accounts for a total of approximately $4,000.
Funds are available in Account No. 110-4300-413-3120 to include these costs.
Therefore, staff recommends that City Council, by minute motion, authorize out of state
travel for City Engineer to attend the Institute of Transportation Engineers Annual
Conference in Melbourne, Australia, August 7 — 10, 2005.

Technical Sessions
The meeting, which is divided into five tracks, offers 55 technical sessions. The tracks are Traffic Engin(
Safety, Transportation Planning/Transit/ Livable Communities, Transportation Operations/ Management
Leadership and Asset Management.
In addition to a renowned technical program you will have the opportunity to network with transportation
professionals from a wide range of specialty areas.
All sessions, as well as the exhibit, will be held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre unle
otherwise noted.

Temperatures in August will range from 59°F (15 °C) during the day to 44 ° (7 °C) at night. The average
in August is 1.9 inches or 4.83 cm.
