APPROVE PROVIDING 20, 50-WATT SIEMANS SOLAR PANELS
TO THE ENERGY COALITION'S MAJOR RESIDENTIAL TUNE-
UP PROGRAM IN PALM DESERT

Approve providing 20, 50, Watt, Siemens solar panels, from those in storage, to the
Energy Coalition for use in the residential, major home tune-up in Palm Desert.
Discussion:
In 2001, the City of Palm Desert purchased 600 Siemens solar panels for use in a solar
assistance program. Local citizens purchased a number of the solar panels with the
remaining panels being placed in storage. There are 66 panels slated for the new
Visitors Center, and 200 panels are reserved for the North Carport Solar Array being
installed this summer. There are 280 to 300 panels in storage, and staff is suggesting
that 20 of the remaining panels be donated for the Energy Coalition's Palm Desert
major tune-up project. The major tune-up for one select residential unit is estimated at
$5,000. The addition of a small solar system would be a bonus and add to the home
efficiency. The home will be used as a program model and included in the Energy
Coalition's advertisements and so on.
The original cost of the solar panels was $3,620. The current value of the panels is
minimal due to depreciation, and they are no longer on the State list for incentive funds.
However, the panels are still functional and should be put to use.
