IMAGE OF MAQUETTE 2. DEVELOPER APPLICATIONS Recommendation: By Minute Motion: 1. Approve the sculpture design. 2. Authorize the reimbursement of Art in Public Places fees, not to exceed $16,569.98, once the sculpture is completed, installed and approved by the Art In Public Places Commission. Executive Summary: Mr. Watling has been selected to create a sculpture titled "Desert Sails" for the Country Club Marketplace development located at 77-750 Country Club Drive. The Art in Public Places fee for this project is $16,569.98. The Art in Public Places Commission unanimously approved the design of "Desert Sails" at its regular meeting of June 15, 2005. The sculpture will be made out of Mr. Watling's signature Coconino sandstone. An array of vertical plates triangular in shape will be installed suggesting a three dimensional shape of a sail. A taller 7- 8 foot stone located several feet from the others will be the project's identification sign. Discussion: Mr. Walting is a well-known and prolific artist in the Coachella Valley who has created three major entrance signs to the City of Palm Desert and the "Neoglyphs" in Civic Center Park. His use of Coconino sandstone as an art medium is greatly appreciated and has led to other artists using the material for sculptural works and signs in the Valley.
