REQUEST: APPROVAL OF OUT OF STATE TRAVEL
DATE: March 24., 2005
CONTENTS: 2005 INTERNATIONAL ATHENA LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
BROCHURE
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, approve out of state travel for the Senior Management
Analyst/Community Services to attend the 2005 International Athena Leadership
Conference in Chicago, Illinois, April 28-30, 2005. Funds are available in fiscal year
2004/05 account 110-4416-414-3061 and no appropriation is requested or required.
Executive Summary:
Approval of this request will enable the Senior Management Analyst/Community Services
to participate in the 2005 International Athena Leadership Conference in Chicago, Illinois,
April 28-30, 2005.
Background:
The Senior Management Analyst/Community Services was recently invited to participate
in the 2005 International Athena Leadership Conference, which is scheduled to be held
April 28-30, 2005, in Chicago, Illinois.
Several years ago, the City of Palm Desert assumed responsibility for producing an Athena
Awards program. It is critical to the continuing success and growth of this program that it
attract candidates who best exemplify the spirit and philosophy of the Athena Awards as
described by the Athena Foundation and represent Palm Desert as its recipient. Therefore,
discovering the best and most effective manner for the Committee to expand, refine, and
define exactly what it wants the Award to represent to the women of the community is
important. This conference offers networking opportunities and educational sessions that
will outline how to accomplish these goals.
Attendance at this conference will provide an opportunity for staff to learn firsthand how
other communities and organizations produce their Athena Awards programs and what
resources are available through the Athena Foundation. In addition, there will be training
on how to attract sponsorship dollars, which is particularly important in Palm Desert, since
its program funds scholarships associated with its Athena Awards. Funds are available in
the 2004/2005 fiscal year budget in line item 110-4416-414-3061 and no appropriation is
requested or required.

Dear Friend of ATHENA:
MAPPINGyour journey to leadership requires a dedicated effort to NAVIGATING the
rough spots and strategically PLANNING your next steps. Our mission at the ATHENA
Foundation is to support, develop and honor women leaders; inspiring women to achieve
their full potential —creating balance in leadership worldwide. I invite you to join us in
Chicago, April 28-30 at the 2005 International ATHENA Leadership Conference and
discover how to create your road map to SUCCESS.
This year's conference, Journey to Leadership: Creating Your Road Map to Success, is
designed for leaders in the 21st Century and will provide deliverables to women striving
toward key leadership positions or people like yourself who are mentoring future women
leaders. Our conference speakers are dynamic presenters and strong leaders. We believe you
will be interested in hearing: Maggie Daley, First Lady of Chicago, Honorary Conference
Chair; Dr. Lou Anna K. Simon, President, Michigan State University; Karyl Innis, Chairman
& CEO, The Innis Company; Maureen Kempston-Darkes, GM Group Vice President,
President GM Latin America, Africa, Middle East; and Meng Yankun, Chairperson, Shanghai
Women's Federation Representative, Shanghai People's Congress.
Our International ATHENA Award Recipients Sally Armstrong and Kay Koplovitz will be
featured speakers at the Thursday evening GALA. Gary Cowger, President of General
Motors North America, will join us to celebrate GM's 20 year partnership with ATHENA.
Founder of The White House Project, Marie C. Wilson, will give the keynote address at
Friday's Luncheon.
Networking with other professionals from across the country, hearing outstanding speakers,
and attending the GALA and Keynote Luncheon are all reasons we are confident your
decision to attend our 12th annual International ATHENA Leadership Conference is one you
will be glad you made. Please join us in April!
