SUBMITTED BY: RICHARD L. TWEDT, PUBLIC ARTS MANAGER
DATE: MAY 12, 2005
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, permit the possession and serving of wine in connection with the
opening receptions to be held in the City of Palm Desert's art gallery between June
2005 and May 2006. The tentative dates for these receptions are June 7, 2005 (The
Dyslexia Foundation exhibition); September 13 (The Highlights of the North Wing

Show); and May 30 (COD Student exhibition).
Executive Summary:
With each new City of Palm Desert's art gallery exhibition the Public Art Department
hosts a reception for the featured artist(s). In order to serve wine on City owned
property, the City Council must grant a variance from the prohibition of the consumption
of alcoholic beverages.
As per City Council's request, the full 2005/2006 City of Palm Desert's art gallery
season of exhibitions is being submitted for approval in one staff report.
Background:
The City of Palm Desert's art gallery was established to showcase local and unique
artworks by both individuals and organizations. With each new exhibition a reception is
held to promote the artwork and City programming. Events are usually an hour and a
half in length with food and wine served throughout.
