Recommendation:
By Minute Motion:
1. Approve Russell Jacques as the curator of the 2006/07 El Paseo
Exhibition.
2. Award him a $5,000 honorarium.
Executive Summary:
The Art in Public Places Commission selected Mr. Jacques as the curator for the
2006/07 El Paseo Exhibition at its meeting of October 19. The curator receives
an honorarium of $10,000 for the position. The Art in Public Places Commission
provides $5,000 of the honorarium and the El Paseo Business Association
provides the remaining $5,000, once the curator has made the selections for the
exhibition. There were two candidates for the position with a third candidate who
had withdrawn his name due to assuming a full-time position. The El Paseo
curator personally visits all the galleries in Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley
and invites them to participate with sculpture proposals of artists they represent.
Also, the curator, staff from the Public Art Department, and members of the Art in
Public Places Commission invite independent artists without gallery
representation to submit proposals for consideration. The curator selects
eighteen finalists for the El Paseo exhibition, which are presented for approval by
the Art in Public Places Commission and City Council.
Discussion:

professional artist and knows the art community in Palm Desert and Coachella
Valley very well. He also is very aware of professional artists in Southern,
California as he has maintained an active studio in Newport Beach, Califomia
where his work has been exhibited and commissioned for the past fifteen years.
