STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: Adopt Resolution No.05-100, Closing Alaska Avenue at Fred Waring
Drive
SUBMITTED BY: Mark Greenwood, P.E., City Engineer
DATE: November 10, 2005
CONTENTS: Resolution
Vicinity Map
Recommendation:
Waive further reading and adopt Resolution No. 05-100 , closing Alaska
Avenue at Fred Waring Drive.
Discussion:
The widening of Fred Waring Drive from Deep Canyon Drive to Washington Street requires
the construction of a sound wall on the north side of Fred Waring Drive from California
Avenue to Elkhorn Trail. The construction of the sound wall will create an unsafe sight
distance condition for drivers turning west onto Fred Waring Drive from Alaska Avenue.
Staff has extensively reviewed possible solutions to this problem and concluded that traffic
safety cannot be provided without the closure of Alaska Avenue. Traffic count data was
collected which revealed traffic flow on Alaska Avenue to be approximately fifty cars per
day; therefore, this road is not needed for local traffic circulation.
Staff notified all affected property owners and a legal notice was published in the local
newspaper. A public hearing to consider the issue is scheduled for November 10, 2005.
Therefore, staff recommends that City Council waive further reading and adopt Resolution
No.05-100, dosing Alaska Avenue at Fred Waring Drive.
