Recommendation:
By minute motion, direct staff to install directional signs to Desert Cities
Baptist Church at two locations: on Highway 74 at Pitahaya Street and
on El Paseo at Painter's Path.
Discussion:
Desert Cities Baptist Church is located on Greene Way adjacent to the Cahuilla Hills Park.
We have received a request from the church for directional signage to this facility due to the
relatively remote nature of its location. While the church has requested signs at six sites,
staff has evaluated the request both on its own merits and in comparison to signage provided
for other churches within the City. The requested signs are addressed below:
#1 At the corner of El Paseo and Highway 74: The church is requesting to be
added to the existing sign for St. Margaret's Episcopal Church and Palm Desert Community
Presbyterian Church. Staff does not recommend adding a sign at this location; the existing
sign is oversized and any additional information would cause the size of the sign to become
unmanageable.
#2 and #3 On Highway 74 at Pitahaya Street for both northbound and southbound traffic:
Rather than installing a sign on El Paseo at Highway 74, staff recommends installing signs
on Highway 74 at Pitahaya facing northbound and southbound traffic. This will direct traffic
to the main route to the Church from Highway 74.

#4 At the end of Pitahaya on Edgehill Drive: Staff does not recommend installation
of this sign as it would be located in the front yard of a residence and is superfluous; once
traffic has entered the neighborhood, locating the church should be straightforward.
#5 At the intersection of El Paseo and Painter's Path: Guide signs to Desert Cities
Baptist Church used to exist at this location; therefore, staff recommends installation of
directional signs to the church on El Paseo at Painter's Path for both directions of traffic.
#6 At the end of Painter's Path at Edgehill Drive: Staff does not recommend
installation of a directional sign at this location; once traffic has entered the neighborhood,
locating the church should be relatively easy.

Subject: Desert Cities Baptist Church
Hi Mike,
It was good to talk to you this morning. I have enclosed as a Word attachment the information
regarding signage for our church. Except for the actual locations, I have already discussed this
with Philip Drell on July 28, 2005. If you have any questions, call me on my cell phone any time.
With regards to the proposed street name change, we would not be concerned with any
consideration for a name change to the section of Edeghill Drive that runs from Bursera Street to
Thrush Drive. We would, however, based on the information stated in my letter of July 29, 2005,
like the section of street running from Edgehill Drive, across the wash to our parking lot and the
parking area for the Cahuilla Hills Park, to remain Edgehill Drive.
Thanks for your considerations in these matters.
Our prayers and encouragement in your service to the City of Palm Desert.

There has been a precedent already set with two churches on route 74 being
provided with signage
Our request would not set an additional precedent since this is an exceptional
circumstances because...
Desert Cities Baptist Church needs signs because this is where the City of
Palm Desert put us.
Desert Cities Baptist Church would not be requesting any signs at all if our
church was where we originally purchased property (Portola at Country Club).
Consistent with the above mentioned precedent and exceptional circumstances,
the pastor, trustees and congregation of the Desert Cities Baptist Church located at
45-825 Edgehill Drive, would like to request that the City of Palm Desert provide Desert
Cities Baptist Church with the signage at the following six locations...
1. At the corner of El Paseo & Rt 74 with existing signs for St. Margaret's
Episcopal Church and Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church.
2. On Route 74 (southbound) Pitahaya Street sign with an arrow pointing
right (west).
3. On Route 74 (northbound) Pitahaya Street sign with an arrow pointing
left (east).
4. At the end of Pitahaya on Edgehill Drive, with an arrow pointing left
(south).
5. At the comer of El Paseo & Painters Path with the existing Cahuilla Hills
Recreation Area sign.
6. At the end of Painters Path on Edgehill Drive pointing left (south).
