SUBMITTED BY: Michael Errante, P.E., Director of Public Works

CONTENTS: ITE Annual Conference Information
Recommendation:
By minute motion, authorize out-of-state travel for the City Engineer and
Transportation Engineer to attend the Institute of Transportation Engineers
District 6 Annual Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii June 25-28, 2006.
Executive Summary:
The City of Palm Desert has earned a solid reputation as a leader in transportation
engineering for mid -sized suburban cities. We were recently recognized as having one
of the top ten best -operated signal systems in the country. We are frequently
commended by residents and visitors alike for the excellent transportation system we
enjoy. This excellent system is due to the hard work of the transportation engineering
staff in the Public Works department. Many of the innovative measures that have been
implemented have been learned at technical conferences of the various associations of
which we are members.
The City Engineer and Transportation Engineer are active members of the Institute of
Transportation Engineers, a professional organization supporting safe and efficient
transportation. The Institute of Transportation Engineers is considered the leader in
transportation engineering learning and education. The benefits of attending the annual
conference include exposure to the latest developments in transportation engineering
as well as promoting Palm Desert as a leader in the field. As our community continues
to grow, the information presented at these conferences becomes and invaluable tool in
meeting the needs of our city.

It is requested that both the City Engineer and the Transportation Engineer receive
authorization to attend the meeting; both have been active participants in this
organization and have gained a great deal of knowledge from this association. It should
be noted that both the City Engineer and the Transportation Engineer have other out-of-
state travel trips authorized in the budget and will not be attending those conferences in
favor of this conference.
Funds are available in Account No. 110-4300-413-3120 to include these costs.
Therefore, staff recommends that City Council, by minute motion, authorize out-of-state
travel for the City Engineer and Transportation Engineer to attend the Institute of
Transportation Engineers District 6 Annual Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii June 25-28,
2006.
