Box 1808 Indio, California 92201 DATE: April 13, 2006 CONTENTS: Amendment No. 1 to Contract No. C24350 Contractors Quotation Location Photos Recommendation: By minute motion, approve Contract Amendment No. 1 to Contract No. C24350 with Contreras Construction Company to include four additional locations in the 2006 Citywide Curb, Gutter, and Sidewalk Program (Project No. 753-06), in the amount of $77,122.00. Discussion: In November 2005, the City advertised for contractors to bid on the 2006 Citywide Curb, Gutter, and Sidewalk Program. On January 12, 2006, the contract was awarded to Contreras Construction Company. Staff has identified additional locations where work of the same nature needs to be done. Instead of waiting for next year's program, staff requests approval of a contract amendment to include the additional locations. Below is a list of the locations with brief descriptions: AD-2 Desert Crossing at Fairfield Inn — Recent construction at this location caused an unforeseen condition where vehicles have been hitting the curb when making a right turn into the hotel parking lot from Highway 111. Delineators have been installed as a temporary measure to make the curb more apparent. The proposed permanent solution is to pull back the curb to eliminate the problem. Staff Report — Contract Amendment #1 to Contract C24350 Contreras Construction April 13, 2006 Page 2of2 AD-3 Elephant Bar ADA ramps — The wheelchair ramps near the Elephant Bar are not in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The proposed solution is to remove the existing ramps and replace them with ramps meeting the grade requirements. AD-4 Fred Waring median west of Highway 111 — This median prohibits left turns from the Desert Crossing driveway to Fred Waring Drive. Staff has observed drivers on various occasions making the left turn anyway and driving down the wrong side of the divided road to get back to Painters Path. Staff has determined that there is no compelling reason to prohibit this left turn movement. The proposed solution is to remove the median and replace it with a striped median which would allow the left turn movement. AD-5 Magnesia Falls median west of Portola Avenue — Originally, this median was designed to only allow egress from Portola Palms Mobile Home Park (PPMHP). Since that time, the City authorized egress and ingress from the PPMHP gate only as right turn in or out. The proposed solution is to remove the asphalt pavement and extend the curb to connect the two median islands. Then median will then be landscaped to match the existing landscape. Funds are available for this Contract Amendment in account 400-4616-433-4001. Therefore, staff recommends that City Council approve Contract Amendment No. 1 to Contract No. C24350 with Contreras Construction Company to include the additional locations in the Curb, Gutter, and Sidewalk Program (Project No. 753-06).
