REQUEST: REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION of eighth annual "Turkey Trot"
DATE: August 24, 2006
CONTENTS: Correspondence from Desert Cities Track Club
Route Map
Correspondence from El Paseo Business Association
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, authorize the Desert Cities Track Club to stage their eighth annual
"Turkey Trot" on Thursday, November 23, 2006 (Thanksgiving Day), from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30
a.m.
Executive Summarv:
Each year the Desert Cities Track Club hosts a "Turkey Trot" for its members on
Thanksgiving morning and for the eighth year has requested that it be held on El Paseo.
Backaround:
The Desert Cities Track Club has requested that El Paseo from Prickly Pear to Ocotillo and
Ocotillo from El Paseo to Grapevine be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday,
November 23, 2006, (Thanksgiving Day), to hold the eighth annual "Turkey Trot" to benefit
the Coachella Valley Autism Society. Representatives of the City's Public Works
Department, Fire Department, and Police Department as well as the El Paseo Business
Association have had an opportunity to address any concerns with regard to public safety,
traffic, and other issues and have received their endorsement of this activity along with
their approval to close the street between Prickly Pear and Ocotillo for a maximum two
hour period (copy of correspondence attached.) In meeting with staff representatives all
concerns were addressed and the route and event were approved as submitted by event
organizers provided they make appropriate provisions for sanitation and coning and notify
residents along Ocotillo in writing at least thirty days in advance of the event of their intent
to hold this activity on Thanksgiving morning. This request is identical to the one submitted
by the Desert Cities Track Club for the past several years and all provisions of the special
event permit were adhered to as requested. There is no cost to the City of Palm Desert
to produce this event; therefore, no fees are being assessed.
Therefore, staff recommends approval of this event sponsored and produced by the Desert
Cities Track Club on Thursday, November 23, 2006, (Thanksgiving Day), and authorize the
closure of El Paseo from Prickly Pear to Ocotillo and Ocotillo from El Paseo to Grapevine
from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
