RECOMMENDATION:
By Minute Motion, authorize the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District to close El Paseo
on Saturday, February 10, 2007, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Each year, the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District sponsors the Palm Desert Senior
Games, which is a qualifying event for the National Senior Games. The closure of El Paseo is
being requested in order to accommodate one of the activities held in conjunction with this
event.
BACKGROUND:
The Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District (CVRPD) is once again sponsoring the Palm
Desert Senior Games, which is a qualifying event for participants interested in competing in the
National Senior Olympic Games. One of the "medar events is a 5/1 OK run, and CVRPD is
requesting that El Paseo, from Portola to Ocotillo, be closed on Saturday, February 10, 2006,
from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The District would be responsible for set up, barricading, staffing
and monitoring the route, clean up, etc. for this event, and no City staffing is requested. In a
memorandum dated June 21, 2006, the City's Economic Development Manager advised that
the El Paseo Business Improvement District Board of Directors approved CVRPD's request to
close El Paseo to accommodate this event.

The proposed route is attached, and staff recommends that the City Council approve the
closure of �l Paseo in conjunction with the 5/1 OK runt held at the Palm Desert Senior Games,
which is sponsored and produced by the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District, provided
that written notification of street closure is made to residents along Ocotillo 30 days prior to the
event date.

Dear Pat,
As you requested, here is an outline of our request for the 2007 Palm
Desert Senior Games 5K110K runs on El Pasco, Saturday February 10,
2007.
The race will begin at 7:00 am in front of the Gardens on El Pasco. We
request that the south side of El Pasco be closed from Portola to Ocotillo
from 6:30 to 9:30 am (the first turnaround point in the race is in front of
Mayo's). We also request Ocotillo be closed from El Pasco to Grapevine
during the same time period.
The awards ceremony will be held in front of the Gardens following the
race. We anticipate 200 participants.

race awards ceremony.

SUBJECT: Turkey Trot and Senior Olympics
On June 15, 2006 at the regular meeting for the El Paseo Business Improvement
District, the board of directors voted unanimously to recommend to the City Council the
running of the Turkey Trot on El Paseo again this year on Thanksgiving morning,
November 23, 2006 and the Senior Olympics run on the morning of Saturday, February
10, 2007.
