Chairwoman Bowen called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.

III. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Sheila Gilligan introduced David Hermann. Mr. Hermann was recently hired as
Management Analyst in the Community Services Department.
IV. CONSENT CALENDAR
A. MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 19, 2006
Mr. Mandelbaum moved, by Minute Motion, to approve the minutes of the September
19, 2006, meeting. Motion was seconded by Ms. O'Flynn and carried 5-0.

V. NEW BUSINESS
A. VISITOR CENTER BUSINESS/MARKETING PLAN
Donna Gomez presented the Visitor Center's Business/Marketing Plan to the
Committee and was open to suggestions and/or comments from the Committee
regarding the Plan.
Ric Mandelbaum and Mike Osgood made suggestions regarding materials
available to the public regarding local events.
Rick Darius believed the Plan was very comprehensive and congratulated Ms.
Gomez on her effort.
Upon comment by Norine Bowen, Ms. Gomez stated that she was on a
committee that was working on a directional signage program that would include
the Visitor Information Center.
Mr. Mandelbaum moved, by Minute Motion, to receive and file the information received
by Ms. Gomez. Motion was seconded by Mr. Darius and carried 5-0.
VI. OLD BUSINESS
A. BOB HOPE CLASSIC
Ms. Bowen reported that the Bob Hope Classic representatives canceled the
subcommittee meeting. She asked if the Committee wished to discuss the staff
report provided by Ms. Kneiding.
Upon question by Councilmember Spiegel, Ms. Kneiding responded that staff
was not recommending sponsorship at this time.
Mr. Mandelbaum moved, by Minute Motion, to decline the request and forward staff's
recommendation to the City Council. Motion was seconded by Ms. O'Flynn and carried 5-0.
B. NANCY J. FRIEDMAN PR PROPOSAL
Ms. Kneiding gave an overview of the proposal. Ms. Kneiding, Ms. Gilligan, and
representatives from the Marriott had a conference call with Ms. Friedman's
office. There were items in Ms. Friedman's proposal that were already being
performed by Full Gallop Marketing, so the City was able to reduce the monthly
retainer to $5,000. Ms. Kneiding briefly discussed those items that were stricken
from the proposal.
Ms. O'Flynn moved, by Minute Motion, to approve staff's recommendation to negotiate a
lower retainer and forward the Proposal to the City Council for its consideration. Motion was
seconded by Mr. Mandelbaum and carried 5-0.

VII. CONTINUED BUSINESS
None
VIII. REPORT ON CITY COUNCIL ACTION (S)
Mayor Pro Tern Kelly reported on advertising during the Samsung World Golf
Championships. He asked staff to research the cost of running ads during the Samsung
and the Bob Hope Classic.
Ms. Close stated that she didn't know if the Samsung ads that featured La Quinta were
running nationally or locally.
Ms. Kneiding said she could research those costs and report back to Mayor Pro Tem
Kelly.
Discussion was held regarding the Easter Bowl and the California Visitor Center
proposal at the Banning location.
Councilmember Spiegel announced that the City Council moved its November 9, 2006,
meeting to November 16, 2006. That decision was based on the activities being held
the week of November 9, 2006, i.e., the El Paseo Art Work unveiling and the Art of Food
& Wine Event.
IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. Chair
Ms. Bowen reported that The Institute for Sales and Service Excellence would
open on Friday, October 27, 2006, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Complimentary valet
parking would be available. Two hundred people were expected and she
believed they would have a great opening.
B. Committee Members
Ms. O'Flynn reported that the Desert Sampler event was very well attended and
a great success.
On Saturday, November 11, 2006, El Paseo will be the venue for the Art of Food
& Wine Event called "The Pageant of the Casks." There would be over 40
tasting tents and four groove lounges in partnership with Southern Wine and
Spirits and the City.
The Gardens would be hosting the El Paseo Art work being unveiled on the
center lawn on November 9, 2006. That event kicks off the Art of Food & Wine
Event.
Mr. Darius gave an update on the McCallum Theatre's events.

Ms. Gomez reported that the Visitor Center was visible at the Samsung World
Champion for five days.
The Visitor Center hosted the Horticultural Society on Saturday, October 14,
2006. Two hundred and fifty people attended the event. Good exposure and
promoted desert landscaping. She added that it was a great day and were
looking at making it an annual event. Landscape expert Eric Johnson's books
were available for sale. Coachella Valley Water District provided Lush and
Efficient publications. The Visitor Center had record sales that day.
Ms. Kneiding announced that the November Marketing Committee meeting
would be rescheduled to December 5, 2006.
Ms. Gomez said she would contact the Committee members who were interested
in participating in the judging of the ornament contest at the Visitor Center.
The Gardens would be partnering with the Salvation Army this year and the day
after Thanksgiving, November 24, 2006, at 12 noon, will be a kick off and tree
lighting ceremony for an Angel Tree benefiting the Salvation Army. There will be
a ribbon cutting ceremony and the Valley Wide Worship Choir of Children will
sing. A press release will go out and they hope to have city officials presiding at
the event.
Mr. Osgood mentioned that Thursday, October 191h would be the beginning of
Desert Willow's free concert series for the season.
The User Friendly phonebooks have a picture of Desert Willow on its covers this
year.
Rally for Breast Cancer Cure will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2006, $15
per ticket.
Desert Willow was now the "Palm Desert Golf Academy at Desert Willow."
Research showed across the country that some of the best golf academies
incorporated its city's name in its title. The Academy has state-of-the-art
teaching equipment, you can get fitted for any club, and a professional staff
person will be there to serve the student. A new logo was developed as well.
