REQUEST: CONSIDERATION TO APPROVE PURCHASE OF ONE
SCULPTURE FROM THE 2007/08 EL PASEO
INVITATIONAL EXHIBITION
SUBMITTED BY: RICHARD L. TWEDT
DATE: DECEMBER 14, 2006
CONTENTS: COLOR COPIES OF SCULPTURES
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, 1) Approve the four proposed sculptures from the 2007/2008
El Paseo Invitational Exhibition for potential "purchase award"; 2) approve the
use of the funds previously allocated for the Entrada del Paseo art project in an
amount not to exceed $102,472 for the purchase of one of the four sculptures.
Executive Summary:
At its meeting of October 18, 2006, the Art in Public Places Commission
unanimously selected four sculptures from the 2007/08 El Paseo Invitational
Exhibition on which the public will vote for one to be purchased. Members of the
public will vote for his/her favorite sculpture and the sculpture with the most votes
will be purchased for the City's permanent art collection and subsequently
installed within Entrada del Paseo. The four sculptures selected by the
Commission for consideration are: 1. Brad Howe's "El Chupacabra", 10' x 5' x 4',
aluminum, $50,000; 2. Jean Louis -Corby's "Danseur", 12' x 6' x 4', bronze,
$95,000; 3. John Okulick's "Icarus", 10', stainless steel, $35,000; 4. jd Hansen's
"Yesterday", 9' x 4' x 3', bronze, $40,000.
Discussion:
Due to there not being appropriate proposals from the RFP for the Entrada del
Paseo project, funds in the amount of $250,000 are still available to be used as
the public art component for this project. It was the consensus of the Art in
Public Places Commission to use a portion of the funds to purchase artwork from
the 2007/08 El Paseo Invitational Exhibition for the City's permanent public art
collection. Upon approval by the City Council, the Art in Public Places
Commission has directed Staff to advertise the four sculptures through a variety
of publications, including BrightSide, requesting the public's involvement in the
selection of a new artwork at Entrada del Paseo. Citizens will vote via email, the
Public Art Department at the Visitor Center, or City Hall.
