APPROVE Award of Bid to Mastercraft Cabinets (Palm Springs, CA), for $28,080 for eight (8) three -unit and three (3) two -unit personal locker storage pieces at Palm Desert Fire Station No. 33. 2. APPROPRIATE $28,080 from Account No. 231-4220-422-4001 for the Palm Desert Fire Station No. 33 Personal Storage Unit Project. Executive Summary The City Council approved the allocation of funds during the FY 2004-2005 budget process, to remodel the existing kitchens and/or replace appliances in the Palm Desert Fire Station (Station No.33) and the North Palm Desert Fire Station (Station No. 71). This renovation assisted in accommodating current staffing levels, as well as improving the facilities' efficiency and appearance for station personnel and the general public. The Fire Department indicated their desire to now install personal storage unit dividers at Station No. 33. The lowest bid obtained for this project, which included installation, was from Mastercraft (Palm Springs, CA) for $28,080. This price reflects construction of eight (8) three-piece units and three (3) two-piece units. Discussion The Palm Desert Fire Station was constructed over twenty years ago in 1984. An engine company, Paramedics, and administrative staff originally utilized the station. Over the years, as service delivery has improved, the staffing level on a daily basis has grown. This growth now requires the inclusion of additional personal storage units at this station. To meet their storage needs, several firefighters currently live out of their gear bag or doubled -up with other personnel. The few lockers currently in place have been here for many years and are in need of replacement and/or repair. Additionally, the sleeping configuration at the station is in a large dorm style, with open area sleeping by personnel. This subjects all personnel to snoring and movements of others in the room, many times creating an unfavorable environment for a quality night's rest. Fire Station No. 33 Personal Storage Units February 9, 2006 Page 2 of 2 The new series of lockers will add vast improvements in the living and sleeping areas of the station. The requested number of lockers will facilitate the currently assigned staff as well as two additional lockers for days when extra staff is available or assigned. Additionally, the design in the placement of the lockers calls for them as separators of the individual bed areas, thus creating more of a private sleeping area for individual personnel. As all personnel are assigned to a minimum of a three-day shift each week, the individually assigned personal areas will enhance their station work environment. It is anticipated that the purchase of these new and more adequate lockers will facilitate a better resting and sleeping environment for all personnel. Based on the design needs, the individual pieces are in 3 and 2 unit increments in order to separate the individual bed areas. Therefore, based on the monies available, the units may be ordered in separate increments, up to the maximum monies available. All bidders are in agreement that costs may be simply divided into equal costs as noted above for each unit, to the maximum of the bid offer.
