SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2006
SUBMITTED BY: Patricia Scully, CFEE, Senior Management Analyst
DATE: January 12, 2006
CONTENTS: 1. Correspondence from Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District
2. Route Map
3. Correspondence from Economic Development Manager
RECOMMENDATION:
By Minute Motion, authorize the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District to close El Paseo
on Saturday, February 11, 2006, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Each year, the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District sponsors the Palm Desert Senior
Games, which is a qualifying event for the National Senior Games. The closure of El Paseo is
being requested in order to accommodate one of the activities held in conjunction with this
event.
BACKGROUND:
The Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District (CVRPD) is once again sponsoring the Palm
Desert Senior Games, which is a qualifying event for participants interested in competing in the
National Senior Olympic Games. One of the "medal" events is a 5/1OK run, and CVRPD is
requesting that El Paseo, from Portola to Ocotillo, be closed on Saturday, February 11, 2006,
from 6.30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The District would be responsible for set up, barricading, staffing
and monitoring the route, clean up, etc. for this event, and no City staffing is requested. In a
memorandum dated December 9, 2005, the City's Economic Development Manager advised
that the El Paseo Business Improvement District Board of Directors approved CVRPD's
request to close El Paseo on October 20, 2005, to accommodate this event.
CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT JANUARY 12, 2006
RE: REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION TO CLOSE EL PASEO ON SATURDAY,

The proposed route is attached, and staff recommends that the City Council approve the
closure of El Paseo in conjunction with the 5/10K run held at the Palm Desert Senior Games,
which is sponsored and produced by the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District, provided
that written notification of street closure is made to residents along Ocotillo 30 days prior to the
event date.
