Correspondence from Economic Development Manager RECOMMENDATION: By Minute Motion, authorize the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District to close El Paseo on Saturday, February 11, 2006, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Each year, the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District sponsors the Palm Desert Senior Games, which is a qualifying event for the National Senior Games. The closure of El Paseo is being requested in order to accommodate one of the activities held in conjunction with this event. BACKGROUND: The Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District (CVRPD) is once again sponsoring the Palm Desert Senior Games, which is a qualifying event for participants interested in competing in the National Senior Olympic Games. One of the "medal" events is a 5/1OK run, and CVRPD is requesting that El Paseo, from Portola to Ocotillo, be closed on Saturday, February 11, 2006, from 6.30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The District would be responsible for set up, barricading, staffing and monitoring the route, clean up, etc. for this event, and no City staffing is requested. In a memorandum dated December 9, 2005, the City's Economic Development Manager advised that the El Paseo Business Improvement District Board of Directors approved CVRPD's request to close El Paseo on October 20, 2005, to accommodate this event. CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT JANUARY 12, 2006 RE: REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION TO CLOSE EL PASEO ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2006 The proposed route is attached, and staff recommends that the City Council approve the closure of El Paseo in conjunction with the 5/10K run held at the Palm Desert Senior Games, which is sponsored and produced by the Coachella Valley Recreation & Park District, provided that written notification of street closure is made to residents along Ocotillo 30 days prior to the event date.
