STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: CONSIDERATION TO ACCEPT TWO METAL
SCULPTURES AS DONATIONS TO THE CITY'S
PERMANENT PUBLIC ART COLLECTION
SUBMITTED BY: RICHARD TWEDT
DATE: JULY 13, 2006
CONTENTS: 1. COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS OF SCULPTURES
2. BIOGRAPHY OF JIM RICHARDSON
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, accept the two metal sculptures by Jim Richardson as
donations to the City of Palm Desert's permanent public art collection and place
them at the Visitor Center.
Executive Summary:
At its meeting of May 17, 2006, the Art in Public Places Commission conditionally
approved the two proposed metal sculptures to be included in the City's
permanent public art collection. The two sculptures would be installed at the
Visitor Center on the concrete area south of the front entrance. Since the
sculptures have been located at the Visitor Center for review by Commission
members, there have been several comments that the sculptures complement
the design of the building.
Discussion:
Mr. Richardson approached staff with photographs of two sculptures that he was
interested in donating to the City's permanent public art collection. Because the
photographs were not particularly descriptive of the two sculptures, staff
requested higher quality photographs to present to the Art in Public Places
Commission for its consideration. Mr. Richardson complied with the request and
staff presented them to the Commission at its meeting of May 17, 2006.
The Commission requested staff and one Commission member inspect the
sculptures, reviewing the physical condition, quality of workmanship, and overall
aesthetics to meet the standards of the City's permanent collection. Mr.
Richardson retrieved the sculptures from San Diego and Tucson and delivered
them to the Visitor Center for inspection at his own expense.
Subsequently, several Commissioners reviewed both sculptures and the
unanimous decision was to accept them into the City's permanent collection.
Each sculpture has a retail value of $10,000.
The sculptures are 6.5' and 6.3' tall and 30" in diameter at the base. Each piece
has a durable paint application on the upper sections and the lower sections are
patinated rust. One sculpture's surface is treated with paint and patinated rust.
The designs of each sculpture have been laser cut creating a delicate, abstract
pattern that create interesting shadows when Tight shines through them. The
darker sculpture has a wrapped form that echoes the architectural element of the
Visitor Center's rooftop, which would create a complimentary association
between the building and artwork.
