CITY OF PALM DESERT
CITY MANAGERS OFFICE
STAFF REPORT
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
SUBJECT: CIVIC CENTER PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR SYSTEM
PERFORMANCE AND COST SAVINGS
SUBMITTED BY: Patrick Conlon, Director of Office of Energy Management
DATE: July 13, 2006
As requested at the June 22, 2006 City Council meeting, staff has prepared a report on
the performance of the Civic Center Photovoltaic (P.V.) Solar System.
This information was gathered from the data logging capabilities, built into the system's
inverter, and compared to the Southern California Edison (SCE) electrical billing for the
Civic Center.
In the last 12 months, the P.V. system generated 6,864 kWh of electrical power, which
is fed into our main electrical service equipment. This power was produced from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m., during SCE's peak demand time period.
The cost savings to the City in the last year was approximately $4,470. The cost to
install this system onto the carports was $84,000.
Using SCE's current electrical rates and with a continued annual savings of $4,470, the
simple pay back for this P.V. system is 18.7 years.
It should be noted that due to the shading of the P.V. panels from the date palms,
located in the center of the carports, the system is producing leas than one-half of it's
capacity, thus a longer pay back period.
If there are any questions, please contact Pat Conlon.
