B. Librarian's Report (Jeannie Kays)
Ms. Kays provided the following updates:
Distributed the September and October statistics for years 2004 and 2005. She
stated that it had been one year since the automated circulation system was put
in place. She added that the reference desk questions had increased along with
the number of Library patrons.
Reported that she was guest speaker at the Palms to Pines Rotary breakfast.
She spoke about all the great things happening at the Library. She said the
Rotarians donated five bags of new children's books to the Library.
She was interviewed in September by KMIR-6 about the Internet Wireless "Hot
Spot' equipment at the Library.
She added that the Library held its Creepy Halloween event at the end of
October. There were about 135 children and adults in attendance. A
professional storyteller entertained the children with really creepy tales.
Refreshments were served, and crafts were available to the children.
Children's Discovery Museum received a grant for a program called, "The Book
Factory." The Book Factory program would be at the Library on November 16 at
4:00 p.m.
Announced that she was starting to think about the Library's 10th anniversary in
April 2006. She would entertain any suggestions or ideas for the celebration.
C. Event and Volunteer Coordinator's Report (Mary Arnold)
Ms. Arnold distributed a newly revised monthly brochure. The Chef's series was
very successful. The Library sold $65 worth of cookbooks at the event.

prepare a Christmas program to show its appreciation for the volunteers.
She reported that the Event Programs were also receiving great reviews.

E. Friends of the Palm Desert Library (Joan Beasley)
Ms. Beasley reported that the Friends would be holding its board meeting on
November 17, 2005. The board would discuss the need for a workspace.
Because of the large amount of donated books, the Internet people do not have
enough room to go through all of the books. The Calimesa Library was starting a
Friends group and wanted some of the books, which she was happy to give.
She added that the Friends annual meeting would be January 22, 2006.
Ms. Beasley complimented Ms. Arnold on the new series of events at the Library.
Last Sunday over 100 people attended the musical program, and the summer
reading program was successful as well. The bookstore continued to do well and
was making enough money to fund events.

March 8, 2006. She shared a story about a child in a Special Education class at
the Palm Desert Middle School who was affected by the book's story. She said
the program had not yet begun but was already affecting students in a positive
way.
Upon question by Ms. Bowie, Ms. Kays responded that Tutor.com was available
at the Library. She added that you do have to be in the Library to access the
website. Ms. Kays said she would look into getting the information to the
schools.
Upon question by Ms. Manor, Ms. Klassen responded that Councilmember
Benson would be carrying the proposal for a new Library to the City Council.
Further discussion included logistics and the required level of involvement
needed by the State.

NOVEMBER 16, 2005
Ms. Manor began a discussion about increasing the size of the computer lab.
Ms. Beasley inquired as to whether a portable building was ever considered.
The building could be open during classes, and staff would only be needed
during those times.
Ms. Arnold mentioned that some volunteers expressed an interest in working with
the computers.
A discussion was held about creating additional space in the community room.
Ms. Bowie said that laptops require more maintenance than desktop computers.
She added that one laptop computer would cost about $1,100, and locking
cabinets with cases would cost just under $500.
Ms. Manor suggested that the file cabinet could be used to store the computers
and be locked.
The Committee discussed the current computer lab schedule.
Ms. Beasley asked that research be conducted with regard to costs associated
with teachers for additional classes and purchasing laptops.
IX. ADJOURNMENT
Upon Committee concurrence, the meeting was adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
