SUBMITTED BY: H. Spencer Knight, Landscape Manager

CONTENTS: Seminar Description
Presentation Invitation
Recommendation:
By minute motion, authorize out-of-state travel for the Landscape Manager
to present at the 15th Annual Desert Horticulture Conference in Tucson,
Arizona on May 19, 2006.
Executive Summary:
The City of Palm Desert has long been recognized as a leader in the development of
landscapes using desert and and plant materials. In addition, the City Council's
commitment to the appropriate municipal policies for the proper maintenance of these
landscapes has set the City in a position of leadership regarding this component of
desert landscaping. As a result of this recognition by the industry, the Landscape
Manager has been asked to represent the City by presenting and participating in the
15th Annual Desert Horticulture Conference in Tucson, Arizona on Friday, May 19,
2006.
Spencer Knight, Landscape Manager, will be making a presentation on the City's
experience in ensuring that desert landscaping is maintained in an appropriate manner.
In addition, he will participate in a panel discussion with other landscape professionals
on this topic.
The conference is sponsored by the University of Arizona and draws about 450
landscape professionals. This will also be an opportunity for the Landscape Manager to
meet with professionals in the industry and learn from their experiences.
The Desert Horticulture Committee will cover Mr. Knight's travel and housing costs for
the event.

Janet:
I would be honored and delighted to accept your offer. The success the City of Palm Desert has had in landscape
maintenance is due to the efforts of many people but I am excited to pass along the combined experiences of all
of those who had contributed to the success. Do you want an outline of what I will be covering? If so, is there a
cut off date to get it to you? Let me know. Thank you for this opportunity and I hope you get better soon.
Sincerely,
H. Spencer Knight

Subject: Speaking engagement?
spencer,
Hi there! I am emailing instead of calling you because I have lost my voice... nasty head cold.
Just in time for the holidays!
spencer, would you 6e willing to speak at the Desert Horticulture Conference, to 6e held
May 1 qth in Tucson, AZ? You would 6e on a panel with a landscape architect and a
landscape maintenance contractor to discuss Landscape Maintenance. I think everyone here
would 6e inspired to hear what you have done as a city to ensure that the landscape designs
are not compromised 6y the landscape maintenance! You would each have 15-20 minutes to
speak, and then there would be time for questions of the panel at the end.
This conference is sponsored 6y the university of AZ, and draws about +50 landscape
professionals. This talk would be in the Design Track, and I would expect about 1 00-1 50
people in the audience. The Desert Hort committee would coveryourtravel costs, and a
hotel room for the night prior to the event. I am attaching the working draft of the agenda for
your information.
Thank you... I look forward to hearing from you soon. Happy holidays!
