STAFF REPORT
Approve Out -of -State Travel for Landscape Inspector
SUBMITTED BY: Mark Greenwood, P.E., Director of Public Works
DATE: November 16, 2006
CONTENTS: Seminar Description
Recommendation:
By minute motion, approve out-of-state travel for a Landscape In
attend the Improving Public Works Construction Inspection Skills s
Las Vegas, Nevada, December 11-12, 2006.
Discussion:
The Public Works Department's Public Works Inspectors and Landscape Inspectors work
closely together to assure the consistently high quality of construction and landscape
installation in all development and capital improvement projects. Additionally, it is a goal of
the Public Works Department to provide cross -training as a proven method of increasing
efficiency and promotability.
Landscape Inspector Brad Chuck has agreed to attend a course titled "Improving Public
Works Construction Inspection Skills" offered by The University of Wisconsin -Madison.
Attendance at this course would provide Mr. Chuck with basic construction inspection
knowledge including the areas of contracts, plans and specifications, soils fundamentals,
water and sewer construction, and more.
The two-day course fee is $695 plus approximately $600 for travel -related expenses
(hotel, meals, etc.) for an estimated total cost of $1295. Funds are available in the Public
Works Conference/Seminars/Workshops Account No. 110-4300-413-3120.
Therefore, staff recommends that City Council, by minute motion, approve out-of-state travel
for the Landscape Inspector to attend the Improving Public Works Construction Inspection
Skills course in L . s Vegas, Nevada, December 11-12, 2006.
