TWEDT DATE: OCTOBER 26, 2006 CONTENTS: COPIES OF DESIGN CHANGES Recommendation: By Minute Motion, advise staff how to proceed. Executive Summary: Staff contacted artist Heath Satow who created the Palm Desert entrance sign/sculpture at Monterey and Dinah Shore as the public art component for the WaI-Mart Development regarding possible changes. Mr. Satow's proposal included incorporating an additional 12' long and approximately 3 %' tall steel rock and to increase the letters of the words "Palm Desert" to approximately 24". The cost is estimated at $10,000 with an additional $2,000 to remove the existing "Palm Desert" letters and weld an exact steel plate over the area, which would cover the residue from the stainless steel brackets. Another $3,000 is estimated for constructing a concrete pad for the additional element. Discussion: Staff was instructed by Council to explore possible ways with the artist, Heath Satow to resize the letters of the words "Palm Desert" for the entrance sign/sculpture. There was concem tha -thy I ers were too small to see from Monterey and Dinah Shore, mainly bis set back from the st is at least 60 fe or more. iA _; klarchard Twedt, ublic Arts Mgr. / Sheila Gilligan, Assint City Mgr., Community Services Approval: Carlos Iq a,i4y Manager Paul Gibson, Director of Finance CONSIDERATION OF INCORPORATING AN ADDITIONAL ELEMENT IN HEATH SATOW'S ENTRANCE SIGN/SCULPTURE AT THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF MONTEREY AVENUE AND DINAH SHORE DRIVE. That's a problem in that they are welded onto stainless steel posts through holes in the surface... welded on from the inside. In other words, if I did just grind them smooth, you'd be left with a LOT of little stainless steel spots. But... Since I design everything on 1:he computer, I have the exact shape of that face of the sculpture on file. I would be able to cut another piece that exact size in thinner steel, and weld it right over the existing face, on -site. It would involve me bringing out a generator and my portable welder. So there would be a lot of on -site welding and grinding, but nothing dangerous to the general public given its set -back location. Something like that would probably add another $2000 to the budget. I've attached a quick change to the other rendering I sent you, to show it without the letters. I agree with you that it would be better without it saying "Palm Desert" twice:. I'm thinking of something like in the, attached image. This would be almost 12 feet wide (as wide as the tallest current "rock" is tall) and about three -and -a -half feet tall and deep. Cost to design, fabricate, ship and :nstall would be around S10,000. > Can't wait to see your new project, the "Desert Lizard" was > a home run, I can't imagine what your next one will be. > two home runs? :) Thanks. Yes, I'm quite excited about it, I hope it works out with Stan (the developer) and we get the design before your committee pretty soon.
